Conflict Free Diamonds

Q: I have recently got engaged and, like many people, do not want to go down the traditional 'diamond' route - for a number of reasons. One of the main being that I would never be sure where the diamonds had come from.

I ADORE pearls, and love the rings featured on your website - particularly the settings with the diamonds. There lies my problem though. Do you know the origin of your diamonds? Could a setting be done similar to the Bonnie Collection Freshadama Pearl and Diamond Ring but without the diamonds? Or with different stones (not sure which though so totally open to suggestions).

A: The diamonds we use in these small-diamond pieces are melee diamonds and unfortunately there is no way to track the source of such stones, especially when the pieces are purchased from a findings supplier as finished settings. Melee are tiny stones that come from all over the world including Africa, Russia and India. They are sold in bulk to findings suppliers by the tens of thousands.

The piece could be recreated with different stones or with no stones at all, but would need to be recast through CAD software. This would unfortunately make the ring quite a bit more expensive because it would need to be recreated from scratch by hand. In the past when we have done this sort of thing, the custom jeweler costs can be as much as a thousand dollars just for the setting.

1) What is the difference between White Freshadama Freshwater Pearl and White Freshwater Neckace?

2) There are 2 items from your websites (listed as below) which I like the most, but wonder which one is better, in term of quality, grade and type.

A: 1. The difference between a freshadama pearl necklace and a standard freshwater pearl necklace are the pearls that the two are composed of. Freshadama strands are composed of loose-grade pearls: pearls that are reserved usually for earrings and pendants. This means that the pearls are almost perfect in shape, luster and surface. It is the highest quality of freshwater pearl produced today. Our AAA freshwater strands are also of very high quality, but these strands are composed of pearls selected for necklaces, not earrings and pendants.

2. Of the two strands that you are interested in, the freshadama strand is going to be the highest quality.

3. There is a substantial visual difference between the two sizes. Pearls are measured by diameter and are spherical. This means that for every two millimeters of size difference, the visual difference is nearly double the size.

Should Pearl Earrings Match the Strand?

Q: Should the size of pearls in a necklace match the size of the pearl earrings? Or would it look ok if the earrings wear slightly larger?

A: The earrings should either be the same size as the pearls in a strand, or slightly larger. Both combinations work very well. The only thing I would caution against is choosing pearl earrings that are smaller than the pearls in a strand.

Q: I would like to know if you have any single (loose) Hanadama 8.5-9/0mm pearl, certified by the "Pearl Science Laboratory from Japan", just like the Hanadama earings you carry. If not then I would like to know if you sell the paired loose pearl without the earing posts, or with the post but not attached to the pearl (loose pearls)? If possible I would like to purchase just the loose pearls.

A: We could request a single pearl from Japan and have it certified by the Pearl Science Laboratory if you like. This would take approximately three weeks. Also, if you would like a certified pair without the posts attached, we would be happy to provide you with this, and discount the cost of the 14-karat gold findings.

A: While the length is not an issue (any of our Golden South Sea strands can be adjusted by length), a golden South Sea strand in that size will be very difficult to obtain. We routinely carry large South Sea strands, but these are primarily white pearls from Australia, and not golden. We would be happy to contact our supplier of goldens in Indonesia for you to check on large-pearl availability, but it would be of tremendous assistance if you can describe in more accurate detail exactly what you are looking for i.e. the color (deep gold, light gold), shape (round, circle, baroque) and quality.

Q: I am writing to inquire about your threader earrings (TAE-Threader). The description notes that these are available in a peacock overtone. I am wondering if it's possible to special request a color on these? I am attempting to match as closely as possible a tahitian pendant that I have. The pearl on this pendant has somewhat of a dark grey bodycolor with a blueish overtone.

I'm hoping that someone can work with me to obtain pearls for as close of a match as possible. I fully understand that matching completely is likely not possible, and don't want a complete match. I just want similar overtones to my pendant.

Pearl Necklace Lengths

If you are going for a look that is elegant and has an impact but is not too large, I would suggest considering the 8.5-9 mm freshadama strand. A smaller strand is a bit conservative, and the larger strand is more of a statement piece. As far as the length, either 16 or 18 would work well, unless you are thinking of going the more classic-elegant look, which would be a longer strand in the 30- to 40-inch range.

As for the color, I would certainly choose a white bodycolor and then either a rose or a silver overtone for the classic look.

Q: I am interested in purchasing a pair of 10mm pearl stud earrings. If I order a pair of 9-10mm earrings, will they be closer in size to 9mm or 10?

A: When you order any item like this pair of earrings in the 9-10mm range, the earrings will fall somewhere between the upper and lower end of the range. The pearls will match each other in size and all other quality factors but the exact size of the earring pair will vary by up to 1mm.

If you have a preference about the size of the earrings you do have one option. While in the check-out process you'll find a box titled Special Instructions. Simply type a note into that box indicating your preference (if you want the pearls to be as large and close to 10mm as possible) and we'll get that note on the order. When we receive your order, we'll do our utmost to get as close as possible to your preferences by hand selecting the earrings.

Freshadama Pearl Overtones

Q: The website I am looking at is for 10.0-11.0 mm white Freshadama Freshwater Pearl Stud Earings "FDE500".
What type or kind of overtone is show on this picture? Is it silver, rose,or ivory?

A: The photo shows a pair of earrings that have a rose overtone. If you look at the reflection around the light source, you can see a pinkish 'halo' and that really shows the overtone. The silver overtone will be a cool, optic white and the ivory overtone has a creamy, almost antique color.

14-inch Pearl Choker

Q: I am hoping to buy a 14-inch white freshwater pearl necklace (7-8mm)with a matching set of pearl stud earrings. I know that your shortest necklace length available online is 16 inches. Would you be able to craft a shorter necklace, and, if so, how much would the set cost?

A: It will be no trouble at all to create a 14" strand for you. There are two options for creating a shorter necklace for you. The first is for you to order the standard 16" strand and request it to be strung at 14"and we'll included the loose pearls with the package in case you decide at some point in the future you want to lengthen the strand, you already have the matching pearls. There is no extra charge for this restringing.

The other option is to custom order the strand at 14". Since your message did not include the grade quality, I'll include the prices below for both the AA+ and the AAA quality so you have both options. The Earrings are standard items so the prices are as listed on the site.

The price for a 14" strand in AA+ will be $105.00

The price for a 14" strand in AAA will be $160.00

Because this second option is a custom piece, one of our associates will need to put the order into our system. This can be arranged via email or if you prefer to call the office, anyone who answers the phone will be able to assist with the order.

Q: About two months ago I purchased a set of 7-8 mm white Freshadama necklace 16", bracelet, and earrings set with yellow gold. I bought it for my daughter's birthday. Tahitian Pearl Necklaces and Body Color

Q: Do your Tahitian pearls come in a true black or is it the peacock hues that give it the black tone.

A: Tahitian pearls occur in a variety of colors ranging from a very pale silver to a very deep, almost onyx black. The blackest pearls are not the most common however. When you take a look at a detail page from one of our pearl necklaces you will see listed in the specifications both Bodycolor and Overtone. The bodycolor is the base color of the pearl which can be silver, pewter, dark charcoal, etc. The overtone is the color of the refraction from the surface of the pearl, not unlike that light refraction you see when blowing soap bubbles in sunlight. The overtone can be almost any color you can imagine but the most common are the peacock, silver, green, or aubergine or cherry.

A: For all types of white pearls the brightest, most optic white is the silver overtone. The ivory has a little bit of an antique or eggshell color and the rose has a subtle pink tone on the surface of the pearls. Origin of Tahitian Pearls

Q: I want to make sure that the pearls are genuine Tahitian pearls, and I wanted to inquire about the certification of them. Do you provide a certificate for the pearls, showing where they are from, and that they are authenitic? Because my wife ONLY wants to have Pearls from there, beacuse we have been there and she knows exactly what she wants!

A: All of our Tahitian pearls are indeed from French Polynesia. Unlike many other dealers, we purchase all our Tahitian pearls loose either directly from producers in French Polynesia, or at auction. We were successful auction bidders last November at Perles de Tahiti’s First Pearl Auction in Papeete. We also attend the Poe Rava Nui Pearl Auction in Kowloon, Hong Kong, which features only Tahitian pearls from French Polynesia. Black South Sea pearls from other locations such as the Cook Islands, Fiji and Micronesia are not included in any of these auctions.

While it is impossible to issue a third-party origin certificate, as origin is not a detectable trait in cultured pearls, we would be happy to include the origin on a separate certificate or appraisal if you would like, as we can guarantee the origin ourselves.

18kt Gold Findings For Earrings

12-13-Inch Strand of Pearls

A: The short answer is yes, we can make you a custom length strand at just about any length. The price for the strand will depend on the type of pearls, grade quality, size, actual finished length and your choice of clasp. Once we have that information, we can offer you a pricing information.

Drilling a Pearl

Freshwater Pearl Promotions

Q: Not long ago you had some kind of sale on very large freshwater pearls at fantastic prices. I'm curious to know if there's anything like that in the works or if that was a once in a lifetime deal (I'm kicking myself for not taking advantage).

Pearl Necklace Clasp Options

Q: Hi, I just received my Freshadama earrings and they are beautiful! I now want to order a necklace. I noticed that the 7-8 mm strands have the fishhook clasps. Is it possible to get the 7mm ball clasp (on a necklace or bracelet) instead? If so, how much extra would it cost?

Also, are the sets the same exact quality as the individual pieces? I think I could buy a set for less than just a bracelet and necklace. So I might consider doing that and have the extra pair of earrings for a gift.

A: You certainly can get the strand with a different clasp without any trouble. When you add the strand of your choice to the shopping cart, also add the clasp you would like from this page:

You will need to add one clasp for each piece if you order the strand and bracelet. It may add a day or two before we can ship out your order but we custom string pieces like this on a regular basis. In the case of the 7-8mm strand, you are correct, the 7mm size ball clasp will be the one you want.

The sets are the same quality and receive the same scrutiny as the individual items so you needn't be concerned about the quality living up to your earrings. If you place an order for more than one item on the same order we automatically match them for overtone and other quality factors.

You will need to type us a quick note in the Special Instructions box to let us know you want the clasps actually strung onto the strands. We do have some customers who purchase clasps and other findings just for their own purposes and we wouldn't want to send you the strands with the incorrect clasps.

Pearl Paradise Pearl Choker

Q: I'm looking to buy a freshwater pearl choker, and I've heard good things about Pearl Paradise regarding quality and customer service. I've also heard that you will customize strand length. The shortest length for a strand of pearls offered on your website is 16 inches - which would probably work for me, but I'd really prefer a 14 or 15-inch pearl strand. Can I buy a shorter strand from you?

Also, I see that the smallest pearl size you offer is 6-7 mm - is there any way I can specify that I prefer smaller pearls - that is, 6mm rather than 7 mm? I'm very petite, and was looking for pearls no larger than 6 mm.

A: Yes, we can very easily customize a strand for you. Should you decide to place an order with us, you will need to contact our office so that one of us can input the order.

You are correct, the smallest size we offer are the 6-7 mm but we can certainly select a strand that is at the smaller end of the range. The price will depend on a few details and if you can let us know these, we can give you a final price and an ETA for the strand. If you can specify the grade quality, the clasp if you want something non-standard, and the finished length you prefer, we can give you pricing information. Rose Gold Pearl Findings

Q: I noticed on your findings page that you don’t have any rose gold listed, do you sell any?

A: Well, you have very good timing! I am in the process of sourcing and adding some rose gold findings to the site. We have one clasp in rose gold (of which there is only one left in stock but more have been ordered), the Classic lever back earring finding is available in rose gold, and I am waiting for information about some other findings such as rings, pendants, and other clasps.

A: Yes we can make you a custom Tin Cup at 18". The price difference will depend on whether we are adding a length of chain only or also using additional pearls. 36-inch Multicolor Freshwater Pearl Necklace

A: We can easily do a 36-inch multi-color strand with a ball clasp. In AA+ quality this strand will be $177.00 plus shipping and sales tax (if we ship within California). Size of Diamond Rondelles

Q: Can you tell me the range of pearl sizes that the rondelle would work with? I am planning a 12 mm strand, but not sure if this rondelle would be too small.

A: The rondelles are about 7 mm across and I checked to see how they fit between pearls of various sizes. They fit very nicely between the 12 mm pearls and even up to the 13 mm size. Anything larger than that may require a larger rondelle but at 12 mm the fit is quite good.

Freshadama Pearl Set

Q: I'm actually planning to purchase a Freshadama Pearl set (necklace, bracelet, studs) or a Freshadama necklace and dangling Freshadama pearl earrings. I would also consider purchasing a set and dangle earrings if it weren't too cost prohibitive.

My problem is I don't know what the best size pearl for me would be for both the necklace and for the earring - I'm in my late 30's and would like to be able to wear these to work as well as wear them out. What would you suggest? Also in terms of length of necklace - 16" is the usual, correct? I have been promising myself that I would buy myself this special jewelry for quite some time and well, I have something coming up, so I thought it would be a good time. A: The size of the pearls you choose has some to do with age range and your stature, but also your own personal style. On an average size person, the 16" strand will sit just below the hollow of your throat. The 18" strand hangs around the second button down from the collar on a dress shirt or button-down.

As for the size of the pearl, the most popular size range is the 7.0-8.0 mm, this is the classic size you see in the movies and photos of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. They are not so small that they look like your college graduation pearls but not so big that they wear you. And this size can be easily dressed up for a night out or with a suit if you wear more professional attire for work. They can also be worn very nicely with a white shirt and a pair of jeans.

The pearl overtone is also a consideration. The silver overtone is a bright, optic white and not a gray or actual silver color, the ivory overtone is a slightly creamy color like parchment paper or heavy whipping cream, rose overtone is the most universally flattering with a very slight blush of pink that warms up the white color.

If you are considering a set, it's easier for us to match the overtone, luster, overall size, etc. when we make them all at the same time. It's certainly an option to order the items one at a time if you prefer but we won't be able to guarantee an exact overtone match.

A: The pearls are measured side to side, perpendicular to the drill-hole. When the pearls are matched to make strands, the width of the pearls is a bit more evident in the graduation of size. The length of each pearl is also taken into consideration but as long as that measurement is similar, it's not as critical in making the overall completed strand and maintaining a visual and weight balance when the strand is worn.

Actual Length of Pearls in a Strand

Q: I just received the 18 inch strand of akoya pearls I ordered and they are beautiful. When I measure the necklace, the pearls measure 17" and the clasp 1". Is this how the 18inches is routinely determined? I raise this inconsistency since 3 years ago I orderd from you another 18 inch akoya necklace and when I just compared the two necklaces, the 3 y.o. strand has 18" of pearls plus the clasp; 1 inch more of pearls. Please clarify the difference in the 18" from one necklace versus the other.

A: I am happy to hear that you loved the pearls. The industry standard for measuring a necklace is from clasp to clasp. This is done so that a standard can be maintained on how a necklace would lay on a person's neck. When you first receive the necklace, the silk knots between the pearls are still tight. After a few wears, however, the silk will start to loosen up. Therefore, after 3 years of wear, the knots would have loosened up to make the necklace longer than 18" (clasp to clasp).

A: A rope necklace is usually about 36" or longer and can be as long as you like. The price range is really broad depending on the type, size, and grade quality of the pearls. At the moment we have a Monthly Special called "The City Strand" which is pearl rope that looks similar to the strand worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in the movie Sex in the City.

This strand is 35" long, composed of 8-9 mm AAA-quality freshwater pearls with a 14 kt gold clasp. The promotional price is $495.00 which will be in effect until the end of July or until the inventory is gone. There is also another 35" strand listed on the site in freshwater 7-8 mm pearls.

There are no akoya 36" strands listed on the site but we can create a custom length for you. As an example of pricing on an akoya pearl rope: 36" length, white akoya pearls, 6.5-7.0mm, AA+ quality, the price would be $530.00. We can do this with any size or quality of akoya pearl in our inventory.

Q: I wrote some months ago about opera length freshadama necklaces; in the end, I wound up ordering your current special, the City strand, and I love it dearly! (I posted pictures on Pearl-Guide.com, along with other pleased customers, and have gotten private messages from prospective buyers...seems like it's been popular!). I'm so pleased with the necklace, and with the 9-10 mm AAA earrings I ordered to match. Now I've got another question for you-- I was wondering if you sell the white baroque freshwater strands on your web page unfinished/un-knotted and sans clasp-- and if so, how much per strand? Also, the 8.5-12.5 mm measurement given online is taken perpendicular to the drill holes, correct? So the length of the pearls (parallel to the drill holes) is often a bit more than 8.5-12.5 mm?

A: I’m so glad you are enjoying your City Strand! You’re right about it being popular. We have had so many requests that we decided to keep it going through July.

We do have those baroque freshwater strands in loose hank form. The wide range of sizes is partly due to the fact that many of the pearls are flatter one direction than another so the same pearl will measure much differently depending on which way you hold it to measure. And yes, the pearls are measured perpendicular to the drill hole so the pearls that are more drop shape can be a bit longer than the diameter, but we do not take this size into consideration when grading and sizing the necklace.

I’ll take a look at the prices for these as loose hanks and get you that information. In the meantime, if you can tell me any preferences you have about overtone, shape, etc. I can take a look through the inventory and see what we have. Also, if you would like more than one standard length (16” unstrung) and need them to coordinate, let me know that too so I can keep that in mind.

Large Pearls = Large Clasp?

A: For the larger strands we do use larger clasps and we have them available in shiny or brushed gold. These are not listed on the loose findings page as they are not a standard stock items but when a strand is 12 mm and up, we supply a clasp that is the appropriate size for that strand.

Conch Pearl Ring

Q: I found your site through a google search, and happened upon the page featuring natural conch pearls, specifically. On that note....

I have been dating a girl for about 3 years, and have started to look at rings. However, we are not going the traditional route. We've had long discussions about diamonds, and have decided they're not for us, for any number of reasons.

That said, she suggested that I look into pearls. And, I have. I was pushed in the direction of the Tahitian black pearls, and am finding some nice rings in my research. But, then I saw the conch pearls, and have all but stopped looking.

What really grabbed me were the colors. Namely, red.
Dorris, my girlfriend, is Chinese. Subsequently, the color red is a major part of her being, her day-to-day life. She truly believes in the good fortune that is represented by red, the number 8, etc.

Layered into this is her family. Living between the U.S. and Beijing, they are savvy negotiators in many world markets. Her mother, in particular. During my trips to China, I've gone with Dorris and her mother to the various markets and shops were natural and freshwater pearls are sold. In short, these are two women who know what they are looking at when it comes to pearls.

I mention all of this so you have an idea of who I am proposing to, and the importance of having a ring that stands out. I think I may have found that in the conch pearls, but have couple of questions.

Of the conch pearls you have online:

1. Is this your entire inventory, at least your current one. If so, would you be able to help me find that truly "red" conch pearl.

2. These pearls are loose, so I would need to talk to you about a setting. I see that you have at least two associated designers.

I'll leave it at that for now, as I'm sure there will be questions to follow. Regardless, thank you for your time and I appreciate any direction you may be able to provide.

A: The choice of an engagement ring with a pearl instead of a diamond is, as you say, unusual but one that is just beginning to gain interest. Having said that, the idea of using a natural pearl is even more unusual. We have worked with a few men to make a pearl engagement ring but so far nothing even close to a red conch pearl. It would be just stunning!

The current inventory is listed on the site however, new natural pearls are scheduled to arrive tomorrow afternoon. I will go through all the new conch pearls to select any with very intense color and get you photos if there are any that you might like. One thing to consider as you are investigating is the size of the pearl in relation to the color. The conch pearls tend to become less intense in color as they become larger so it would be helpful to know if you have some size parameters in mind.

The ring designs can be created as you like with a natural conch pearl. If you have seen the finished jewelry pieces in the Natural Pearl category and see something there that is in a style you like, we can use that as a jumping off point. The ring can be in either yellow or white gold. Since 8 is an auspicious number, perhaps we can set 4 diamonds down the band on either side of the pearl or surround the pearl with 8 diamonds. This is just a quick idea but certainly a place to start.

Building My Daughter A Pearl Necklace

Q: I interested in building a necklace for my daughter. She is only 2yrs right now. But the idea is to purchase a pearl for events throughout her life; documenting each pearl, the kind it is, why I picked it, and what was going on in her life at the time. Then to have them strung in the order they were purchased and to be given to her on her wedding day.

I just love the example on your web site with the varying colors from white, pinks, gold, and black. Wow, striking! I think I like the 8mm size I wish that those south sea pearls came in 8mm, thinking those would be a nice addition for sweet 16 and graduations. But I think 9 mm would be too big for a wedding … or maybe not. What do you think?

If I were to do this through your company will you all be around in 25 years? Do you string them if I were to send them all back to you marked in the order to be strung? About how many pearls are on the 14 to 16-inch choker? I'm at least 4 pearls behind already: Birth, 1st b-day, 2nd b-day, and Baptism (also thinking of adding one for the time she broke her leg and wore a pink cast for 6 weeks) I would also want to get them for holidays, Xmas, Valentines, Easter, and for whatever other reasons come up.

Is this actually a possible thing to do? I have not heard of anyone else doing it, came up with it on my own. What do you think?

A: Well, I love the idea and we certainly hope to be around in 25 years! It’s kind of an updated version of the add-a-pearl necklace that was such a popular tradition with our grandparents (and some of our parents) generation. I’ll try to address each of your questions in order and if you think of anything else you need, just let me know.

1. You are correct about the South Sea pearls, the smallest size is generally 8-9 mm because the oysters are quite large and the bead nucleus used is usually between 6 and 7 mm. When the pearl forms around the nucleus, the finished pearl will be at least 3 mm larger.
2. It may be too early to tell if the 9 mm pearls are too large for a wedding since it will depend on how the personal style your daughter develops, perhaps how tall she grows to be, and the formality of the wedding. 7-8 mm is generally ideal for most women of any age, but maybe you could consider a few larger ones that she could use on a charm style bracelet to go with the strand?
3. We do offer stringing services (and will do so for at least the next 26 years) so once you have the collection it would not be any trouble to have them strung.
4. The number of pearls on a finished strand will depend on the size of the pearls but for a 7-8 mm strand, there will be approximately 56 pearls, for 8-9 mm there will be around 50 pearls.
5. Love the pink cast! Wish I had one like that when I was 7, but I digress….
6. It is possible to do this however, there is something you might want to keep in mind, most strands are matched for color, luster, shape, and with a slight graduation in size from front to back in order to give a pleasing and smooth effect. To the naked eye they will appear to have a uniform size and overall appearance. When you purchase pearls one at a time if you want the finished strand to have that smooth graduation (even with a larger size range) it can be very difficult. If you are thinking about a multicolor version then the pearl color and overtones will not be as critical to the finished product. The size, shape, and quality will be something you might want to think about before you get started. If you think outside the box and consider perhaps a non-traditional style necklace like a tin-cup or charm style, then it would be much less of a consideration.

2. What is the length of a Classic Leverback Earring 14K Gold (KSFEOOA-B) without a pearl?

A: This strand comes with the polished ball clasp as the standard but if you prefer the matte finish we can change it for you. The price of the piece will not be any higher and we do not charge a fee for this service.

The length of the Classic lever back finding is approximately ¾ -inch from the top of the ear wire to the top of the cup where the pearl is attached.

Pearl Questions

Q: I am new to your website and have a few questions that I would appreciate help with.

First, your website says about your black freshwater pearls that they are "treated," but I can't find an explanation for what that means.

Second, I am interested in one of your natural, multicolor freshwater necklaces, but am unsure what color earrings to match to it.

Third, is it possible to get a double freshwater strand made in a shorter length than is specified? Is there an additional expense for that?

And finally, I am wondering if there is some way that your pearl shortener could be used to shorten an existing pearl necklace of mine. It is 17 inches, and I would like to wear it more as a choker (about 14.5 to 15 inches). Can your shortener be used to shorten my necklace like that or is it only for double looping a longer strand?

A: The treated pearls indicate that they have been color treated in some way. For the Freshwater black pearls this indicates that they have been dyed. This treatment has been done successfully for many years and has proven to be color-fast and quite popular.

The multicolor strands have so many different hues that you can select any color earrings you prefer. When you place an order for multiple pieces as you have described, we err on the side of caution and will match the earring color to the strand. For example, if you select the multicolor freshwater strand and a pair of earrings in pink, we would match the earrings to pink pearls in the strand.

As to your last question, we would be able to customize the length for you on a double strand. If you would like the strands nested (so they rest right up next to each other) the difference in the length is 1”. In your example, you would request 14.5” and 15.5” or 14” and 15”. If you decide on this custom double strand, simply type a note into the Special Instructions box to let us know and we’ll string it as you request. There is no additional charge for this customization however, should you return the strand it would be subject to a restringing charge to restore it back to a standard length.

Your question about the pearl shortener is a good one and I have requested an additional photo be put on the site so that all our customers can see how this piece functions. This photo should be up on the site by the end of the day tomorrow so check back to see what it looks like on a strand of pearls. And yes, you can use it for shortening your strand unlike the pearl clip which is used for double looping or a torsade. You will end up with part of your strand doubled up at the back almost like an extender that dangles.

Cusomizing Lengths and Clasps

Q: I have a question: is it possible to subsititute an existing clasp on a necklace for another? Or--even add an extra clasp to an existing necklace for maximum versatility? For instance, I love the "City Strand" necklace, but would like to be able to break it apart with a couple of added clasps to convert it to a choker and/or double strand necklace when desired.

A: Yes, we can either change a clasp on an existing necklace or custom make a set of strands using the same clasp on each so that they can be combined. Another option you might consider is the Mystery Clasp.

This one is great if you want to make a series of piece that are interchangeable and you don't necessarily want the clasp to show. For example if you have a standard 18" strand and the 7.5" bracelet is used for the extender, one of the clasps will probably show unless you are wearing it under a collar or have longer hair. If you choose a decorative (rather than strictly functional) clasp and would like it to show then this will not be an issue. If however, you want the clasps to be anonymous, then the Mystery clasp might be just the thing. The clasp will completely disappear when you put the sections together. The only caveat about the Mystery clasp is that the pearls need to be 7-8mm in size at the smallest.

We can do basically the same sort of thing with the Freshadama pearls in any configuration you like. If you decide on a variety of lengths and a few clasp options, I will be happy to give you some price and ETA estimates.

Remounting Earrings

However, after trying on the earrings a few times, my wife found that the pearls were just too big for her ears as studs. I was wondering if its possible to remount the pearls into a different set of earrings, preferably ones where the pearl hangs down on a chain.

A: Yes we certainly can remount the pearls on a dangle style finding. Depending on the architecture of the earlobes, 10.0-11.0mm pearls can be too large for studs. It’s a fairly simple matter to remove the pearls from their original mounting and reset them. This process only takes a few days and does not harm the pearl.

A: The multi-color strands typically include some pink, some peach, white, and other colors. We are able to select a strand that has mostly pink pearls and replace any peach for pink if you would like. For the 7-8 mm strand, I think the Dolce clasp would be too large to be proportionally attractive.

Match Lost Pearl Earring

Q: I was wondering if it was possible to get a replacement earring, as one of a pair was lost. I did just order a replacement pair for my girlfriend, but thought it would be nice to "find" the other as it has some sentimental value. A: What a thoughtful idea! It’s very likely that we can make a single earring to match the one she still has. It will depend on the type and size of the pearl, and the style of the earring but we have done this for many of our customers.

In order to make the earrings match you will have to send us the one that is remaining. Without the pearl here in person, we won’t be able to determine the type of pearl, the overtone, luster, and grade level. The other consideration is the finding or goldwork. Tahitian Black Pearl Earrings

Q: My daughter has a pair of Tahitian Black Pearl earrings. We would like to get her your Classic Collection Tahitian Pearl Pendant "TAP-Classic" but it doesn't seem to indicate a color of 'black'. Can you enlighten me please?

A: The name black Tahitian pearls is a bit of a misnomer. They were given this name to indicate the difference between the white South Sea pearls and the dark colors of the Tahitian pearls. There are some that are very close to black, but the majority of these pearls have a medium to dark bodycolor with a variety of overtones. These overtones are what really give the Tahitians their amazing character and depth. You can see photos of the most common overtones in the example pictures on each detail page for the pendants.

If you have access to your daughter's earrings you can most likely identify the overtone by placing them on a piece of white paper and looking at them using indirect sunlight. Then compare them to the photos of the color examples and see which is the closest match. When putting together a set of earrings and a pendant, the color match need not be identical. As long as they are in the same family, the pieces will coordinate well since they are not worn directly next to each other.

Another option is a service we offer for matching. Depending on your situation and if the pendant is a surprise, you can send us the earrings and we'll match the pearl for the pendant with the earrings and ship them both together back to you. Pearl Strand Shortener

Q: I am interested in the pearl shortener, 975-WR. Can you please measure and let me know the diameter of the 2 spaces ? I want to know what is the largest size of pearl this shortener can accommodate. Will this work for various size pearls?
In addition, what is the measurement for the pearl clip, length and width ?

A: The pearl shortener is 16.5mm long by 8.5mm wide with the diameter of the openings at about 5.5mm. Since the shortener sits between the pearls, it can accommodate pearls that are up to 9.5mm and as small as 6mm. Any pearls that are larger than the 9.5mm may be too large to fit in this shortener but if you have a strand of pearls in a larger size, you can let me know the size and I’ll be happy to test it out on a strand here in our office.
The pearl clip is 24.5mm x 19mm (about 1-inch long) and is a great piece for your Torsade pieces or for those particularly long strands.

Q: I'm considering presenting an Abalone Pearl to my partner as an engagement piece ( a special request ). For the past few months, I have been researching these extremely rare pearls and I find myself curious as to where exactly your company sources these pearls from. I understand any reluctance to reveal too many details, however, being somewhat familiar with the aquaculture industry, I was hoping fro some general information about your collection.

A: We are able to tell you that the abalone pearl selection we have at the moment is mostly from the green or pink abalone from southern California and Mexico. There are also some from the red abalone in northern California. Our current selection will be increased in the next week or so. We have just received a new lot of abalone pearls which will be photographed, cataloged and listed on the site which usually takes a week or two to complete.

It's certainly an interesting choice for an engagement piece! We have had a marked increase in interest for pearl engagement rings with both natural and cultured pearls in the last year but nothing with an abalone pearl as of yet.

Q: Is the "hanadama" collection more "pink" in color than just "pink" overtones and The AmericanPearl.com web site states of their "Collection" series. Is there a "higher" grade of pearl than the Hanadama? Thank you.

A: This is a question we get asked quite frequently. It is unfortunate that there is some misinformation about Hanadama on the Internet today. So far, it is contained to AmericanPearl.com. That is fortunate.

Hanadama has nothing to do with the color of the pearls. Hanadama literally means "spherical flower" and the name is derived from the national flower of Japan - the sakura. The sakura actually blooms white - not rose. Hanadama pearls are available in both rose and silver. But they are no pinker than other akoya pearls in general.

American Pearl once claimed that Hanadama are the highest-quality pearl in the world. They did this until other online companies started also selling Hanadama, but at lower prices. This happened last year. In fact, last year Hanadama was AmericanPearl.com's "Collection Quality". You can see that here in Web archives:

Kokichi Mikimoto was the first to commercially harvest akoya pearls, and the Mikimoto company is the company that created the grading, Hanadama. This is now an industry term used to refer to the highest quality akoya pearls in the world. The following can be found on the Mikimoto Web site:

Pearl Rosary

Q: We placed our first order with your company for Christmas and were very impressed with the quality of your work.
We are Catholic and my Son is making his First Communion in the next few months and I would like to give him a special rosary.
It could be made out of odds and ends pearls of different sizes to keep the cost down.

A: I have been doing some research about making the rosary for you and have some information and a few questions.

We can make it for you with loose freshwater pearls. I used a rosary from one of the girls in the office as an example and have determined the following:
1. There are 57 pearls or beads
2. 5 groups of 10 pearls with a single pearl between each group
3. 3 pearls on the bottom with a crucifix suspended at the end
4. These 3 pearls and the crucifix are suspended from a smaller medallion
5. The pearls in groups of 10 are attached very closely to each other
6. The space between the single pearls between the groups and the 3 suspended pearls is longer – about ½ inch

A few questions for you now:
1. Would you like the pearls set on sterling silver or 14kt gold?
2. Can you give me an idea of approximately how big you would like the crucifix -1 inch, 2 inches?
3. The piece that is above the crucifix can be a saint, the virgin Mary, etc, do you have a preference for this piece?
4. The smallest size pearls we have are 6.0-7.0mm (about the size of a pencil eraser), is that about right for size?
5. Do you have an approximate budget and also the time frame?
6. Would you like white pearls? We also have them in pink and lavender natural colour and black pearls which have been treated to obtain the colour.

Hanadama Questions

Q: I have been doing some pearls research and have a few questions about the Hanadama pearls you sell.
1. Do you sell strands in a pearl size smaller than 7.5-8.0 mm?
2. Are there future plans to sell strands less than 18" in length? Is there a stringing technique that will allow the strand to be warn as either 16" or 18"?
3. Do you sell Hanadama studs to match? If not do you recommend purchasing the best quality Akoya?

A: The classification of Hanadama is designated only by the Pearl Science Laboratory in Japan. The certificates are issued for 18” strands only, not loose pearls.

When you purchase a Hanadama strand, they are not yet strung so that you may select the clasp you prefer. At that time we also have the option of removing pearls to create a strand that is shorter than the standard 18”. By including those additional loose pearls off the strand, with your package, the original Hanadama certification is still valid for the strand. It is possible to string the strand at 16” and use a clasp with a chain extender so you have the option of length. It is also possible to use mystery clasps to create a 2” piece which can be inserted into the back of the strand for a continuous length of pearls.

The loose pearls removed from the strand can either be included in the package with the finished strand or two of those pearls can be made into dangle style earrings. The earrings must be dangles since the pearls are already full-drilled and as such, cannot be made into a stud style. If you are interested in a stud style earring, you can order the AAA quality pearls and we will match them to the strand. While the earrings would not be certified hanadama grade, we can select the same quality from inventory to match the strand.

Freshadama Solitaire Necklace

Q: I bought a earrings (Freshwater Yellow Gold : 14K Yellow Gold, Choose Your Overtone : Peach, Choose Your Quality : AAA Quality) and I'd like to buy a matching freshwater 10-11mm peach AA+ or AAA quality for the "Solitaire Collection Pearl Necklace" design but without the chain (I already have it). Would it be possible? How much would it cost?

A: It's possible to make a Solitaire necklace with a coordinating Freshadama pearl. If you would like to use a snake chain you already have, you can purchase the loose pearl and take it to a jeweler to have the pearl mounted or send the chain to us and we'll have it done for you. The pearl would be drilled with a hole large enough to accommodate the diameter of the chain but not the clasp. In order to get the pearl onto the chain, the clasp must be removed and then once the pearl is on the chain, the clasp is soldered back on by our goldsmith. Because of this, the pearl is permanently mounted on the chain. Should you decide to order the loose pearl and have us drill the hole, we will need to know the exact millimeter size of the chain you have.

Freshadama Hues

Q: I notice a significant difference between the hue of the pearls in the 7.0-8.0mm White "Freshadama" Freshwater Pearl Necklace picture and the White "Freshadama" Freshwater Pearl Set picture --- the picture of just the necklace looks white/silver while the picture of the set looks more gold/rose colored. Which picture is more accurate?Also, I am likely quite interested in the 7.0-8.0mm White "Freshadama" Freshwater Pearl Necklace as a wedding present (beginning of June), but I am worried about it being sold out by then. Will this item likely be available for purchase in mid to late April? I want to make sure it is what my fiancee wants and thus, would need to give it to her within 90 days of purchasing it. If I purchased it now, then I would have to give it to her 2-3 months prior to the wedding. Please let me know what you recommend regarding this.

A: All white pearls occur in a variety of overtones so each strand will have a slightly different look. The photos of each pearl size on the site are all of different strands so they will not be identical. The 3 main overtones are silver, ivory, and rose with the ivory being the most common in the freshwater family of pearls. There is no overtone choice offered for the freshwater or Freshadama pearls however if you have a preference, we should be able to accommodate you. When you decide to place the order you can still do so via the website and indicate your preference in the Special Instructions box while in the check-out process. The 7.0-8.0 mm Freshadama strands are a standard item on our site and we currently have a fairly large inventory. There is no danger of us running out of these so you needn’t worry about not being able to get a strand for your fiancée. Once you place an order, we only need a few days to assemble the set, even if there are any customizations. For example, should you decide to have the bracelet made a different length or upgrade the clasps to one with diamonds, we will only require a few extra days before shipping.

Loose Tahitian Pearl Lots

Q: I am a designer in Central Pennsylvania. I have been starting to work with tahitian pearls in my work and am looking for a source of appropriate tahitian pearls. I have seen Jeremy's posts on the pearl-guide and he made reference to importing and resale. Do you sell small lots of loose pearls? If so, how to do start the process of getting information about that? (I do have appropriate EIN number and state tax ID of course.)

A: We do indeed sell lots of Tahitian pearls. Our main focus is on rounds in A/B lots which are no-spot to 2-3 or 10% spot. These are the lots we typically bid for at auction. From these lots we separate the top gem which is no-spot to single spot which of course becomes top gem when the pearl is pierced. These are the pearls we use for single, pair, and triple sets in earrings and pendants.
We also do buy large lots of circle pearls, although we typically process most of these into strands immediately as they are a bit more difficult to sell.
Keshi pearls are another genre of Tahitian we have recently entered, and we currently have approximately 100 lots of 50 mixed keshi each.

What types of pearls are you looking to use in your pieces, and what size lots are you interested in?

Our current inventory of round is somewhat low at the moment, but we still have several hundred pieces in most sizes up to 13 mm. We plan to replenish at the Poe Rava Nui auction in Hong Kong at the end of February and again at GIE Tahiti pearl auction in Papeete in March.

Purple Pearl

Q: I grew up in New Jersey and spent a lot of time fishing in the Barnegat Bay on the way to our boat, and on the way back was a curb market named Grover's. We stopped there often to eat. One afternoon in 1975, we bought two or three bushels of clams and shared them with many of our neighbors at home. While eating a clam, I bit into a pearl. I thought it was cool and very pretty but everybody there said it was probably worthless but I held onto it all of these years.

I now reside in a small town in Alabama and on New Year's Day of 08', I saw a news report about a couple in Florida had discovered these at a restaurant. I curiously got mine out and got online on my daughter's computer and found your web site and many pictures of pearls are like mine. Can you help me in any way possible?

A: What you have appears to be a rare quahog pearl. These come from the quahog, also known as the cherry stone clam.

I am familiar with the story that made headlines about the pearl found by the couple in Florida in a plate of steamed clams. This story made quite the headline when apparently a local jeweler stated it could be worth as much as $25,000. Before continuing I think it is important to note that the pearl they found would likely wholesale for only around 1% of that valuation, and only if the pearl was in good condition. It had been steamed after all. The $25,000 valuation had no real basis in reality.

Back to your pearl, however, it is a rare find. Based on the picture I would estimate that the pearl is 8 to 9 mm in size, and it is button-shape. The color is not too deep, and there appears to be some discoloration with less saturation near the top, but it still appears to be a nice pearl. It actually appears to be quite a bit nicer than the pearl found in Florida. That said, it is almost impossible to evaluate it from the pictures alone. It could have a wholesale value, however, in the $1000 range.

Although we do not deal in Quahog pearls, we work with a natural pearl dealer who collects them and sells them at jewelry shows in Tucson and Las Vegas. If you are interested in selling your pearl please let us know, and we can forward your information along to him.

Pearl Overtones

Q: I am interested in purchasing a pearl necklace to give to my fiance for our wedding. What exactly is the "overtone" option for the necklaces?

A: The overtone is a very subtle variation of the white colour of the pearls. The basic overtones are silver, rose, and ivory the choice of which is really based on the skin tone of the person wearing them. For someone with any redness or who has freckles, the best overtone is silver. A person with any cool undertones or very dark skin, the best choice is ivory. If she has more of a medium skin colour and gets even a little bit tan in the summer, the best is rose. If you are just not certain about any of this then the rose is probably the one you want – it’s the most universally flattering and you really can’t go wrong with the rose.

Sometimes it helps to know if she prefers to wear yellow metals or white metals, or her choices in wardrobe colours. Exchange Pearl Strand

Q: I hope this note finds you well. I am writing regarding the 18 inch Akoya strand that Paul purchased for me at the end of December. They are quite lovely, however and I am wondering if I could exchange them for a 16 inch strand. The 18 inch tends to be too long for me. Would this type of exchange be possible?

A: We would be happy to exchange the strand for a 16”. Simply send the strand to the address on the invoice, Attn: Exchanges/Returns, and we’ll send you back the shorter strand. Please include a copy of the original invoice if it’s available with a letter indicating what you would like. If that invoice is not available to you, you can include all your contact information in the letter along with the name on the original order and we should be able to locate that information. We will then either credit back the difference in the price.

Baroque Freshwater Pearls

Q: Hello. I just had a few questions about the baroque freshwater pearls. Are the colors natural, have they been treated in any way, are they tissue nucleated, and what are they graded as? Sorry for all of the questions at once. About the grading, I noticed that all of the round pearls were graded on the A scale, what is the grade on the A scale for these pearls?

A: The freshwater whites, pinks, lavenders, and multi-colours are all natural colour. They have been washed, cleaned and polished but have had no colour treatment. Freshwater pearls are tissue nucleated which is the main reason perfectly round freshwater pearls are such a rarity. The grading scale we use is the scale that was developed by the GIA in mid-century. The baroque pearls are still graded based on the same scale but as you can see by the listing, we do not offer a grade quality classification on these. Based on the grading scale, all baroque pearls would be in the lower quality range however, these pearls do exhibit very high levels of quality for the individual value factors. Because of this, the grade quality would not be accurate. The freshwater baroque strands we have listed on the site generally have good luster, light to moderate blemishing, and a variety of overtones. Many of the pearls will also exhibit orient which is a rainbow –like reflection on the surface of the pearls.

Pearl Earrings - Larger or Smaller than Strand

Q: I ordered a bracelet in November for my girlfriend, and the pearls were 6.5-7.0 mm in size. I purchased the Akoya type because of your descriptions on your web site about how beautiful they were.

Now I'm thinking of a pair of earrings to go with them and my question is, would you normally wear the same size pearl, larger or smaller. I was thinking probably a bit larger, but I'm not sure.

Secondly, your pricing on your Freshdama pearls are very attractive, could you tell a big difference if I was to purchase these freshwater type vs. the Akoya?

A: There are no hard and fast rules about the size of the pearl earrings and strand being the same so you can select any size you like. Having said that, in my experience most women like a slightly larger earring. We tend to wear them more often than the strand and since they are a single pearl right next to the face, the slightly larger pearls end up being our favorite and quite versatile.

As far as mixing the Freshadama earrings with an Akoya strand, there is no problem with that at all. The quality of the Freshadama pearls is such that they are often difficult to distinguish from the Akoya pearls. As long as the overtones are similar, they will make an excellent match. The price and value on the Freshadama pearls are quickly making them favorites with our customers, including those who normally purchase Akoya pearls.

21st Birthday Pearls

A: I’m so glad you have been enjoying your pearls! If your daughter has similar colouring to yours and likes your strand, I would stay with the Ivory overtone and white gold. For a 21st birthday, a milestone for sure, she is likely to be finishing up school or starting her career. In this case I would suggest the Akoya pearls like yours in either the 7-7.5mm size or the 7.5-8.0mm size. If she tends to be a little more bold in her style you could select the 8.0mm, for a more classic and conservative style, the 7.5mm would probably be a better choice.

Black Freshwater Pearl Overtones

Q: I am looking for a christmas gift for my girlfriend and came across your website. I am thinking about purchasing the 18" AAA grade 7-8mm black freshwater pearl necklace and was curious if every pearl has a different overtone? I noticed that the picture on your website shows each pearl a different hue. I also noticed that the black Akoya pearls dont seem to have this. I am completely new to pearl buying so any information is a huge help! Also, are there any coupons I could print out before I order?

A: You are correct, the overtones on each pearl is a little different on the black freshwaters. The pearls are treated to give them the dark colouration and each pearl will react differently. The freshwater and Akoya pearls are treated in much the same manner but because of the difference in physical and mineral properties of the pearl types, the end result is not the same. Freshwater pearls will end up in a more varied range of overtones whereas the Akoya pearls seem to take the treatment in a much more uniform fashion.
