Q: I saw a site with wholesale necklaces of "black freshwater pearls." I always thought that these were color enhanced, not natural colors, if they were freshwater. The manufacturer is in China. Can you bring me up to date on this?
A: You are correct about black freshwater pearls – they will have been colour treated. The only naturally occurring “black” pearls are Tahitians from the South Pacific, French Polynesia regions. Some freshwater pearls do occur in colours other than white but those are in the pastel colour range like pinks & lavenders. When you see freshwater or Akoya pearls in the black, peacock colours or in very intense colours such as bright green or blue, they have been dyed.
We, at Pearl Paradise, strive to make sure that the descriptions of these pearls on our website indicate some form of colour treatment so that our customers are fully informed. The dark colour treated freshwater pearls are a very popular item since they are reminiscent of natural colour Tahitian pearls but are available in a more accessible price range. You are wise to do your homework so you can make an informed choice in your purchase. If you need any additional information, please feel free to contact us and we’ll be happy to assist.
