Q: I'm interested in buying a set of pearl jewellery for my fiance's birthday, but wanted to know more about the option of overtones. I assume she'd like whatever I get her, but I think she'd prefer a more classic look - would this mean silver or ivory overtone?
A: The overtones are generally chosen based on the skin tone of the person wearing the pearls. Similar to selecting the colors in ones wardrobe, pearl overtones are generally the most flattering when they are a compliment to the skin tone and not the same as the skin tone. The three most basic overtones are rose, silver, and ivory with the breakdown more or less as follows:
Silver overtone - warm or ruddy skin color,
Ivory overtone – cool skin color
Rose overtone – most universally flattering, not the best on red or ruddy skin color
If you are not sure of her skin tone, you can also determine it by the colors she has in her closet. Should she prefer ivory, yellow, or gold colors, you should select ivory overtone. If she wears more blues, bright whites, and cool colors, then the silver or rose overtone may be your best bet.
