Pearls for a Child

Q: My niece, age 8, wants some pearls and I am uncertain as to whether I should select Akoya or freshwater. What would be your recommendation? Also, could a bracelet be made six inches instead of the larger size?

A: My recommendation for an 8 year old girl would be freshwater pearls unless the necklace is meant only for special occasions. The freshwater pearls are much more durable and will hold up better over time. It’s no problem at all to make a bracelet or a necklace in a shorter length. If you do decide to order a set for your niece, we can make both pieces in shorter lengths but include the loose pearls so that as she gets older, they can both be restrung longer with the pearls that already match.
