Peacock or Green

Q: Hi, I was wondering what is the difference between the "peacock" and "green" overtone for the black Tahitian pearl? I have seen and most stores have the "peacock green" overtone, but not as 2 separate colors like the ones you have. Please clarify what does each overtone color mean.

Q: True peacock overtones are more of a combination of colors than any single color like green or silver. Peacock will have elements of blue, green, aubergine and rose – much like the tail feathers of a Peacock. As the pearl moves and shifts so will the color. The other overtones such as aubergine, green, aqua, and silver, will have more of a single color. The other factor will be the depth of bodycolor which changes the intensity of the overall appearance of the pearl. As you can see from our three illustration pearls, there is a marked difference between the colors.

The reason you see many “green” Tahitian strands advertised as peacock in jewelry stores is because of the rarity of true peacock. But these strands are not what we (or people in Tahiti) would consider true peacock.

So what about a dark-color pearl with green overtones? Does the pearl need the cat's eye effect to be considered peacock, or is it just in the colors?

Dark colors with green overtones are considered peacock by some, but to truly be peacock the pearl needs to have another overtone such as red or purple. The cats-eye effect usually produces this color effect.
