Q: Could you tell me a little about South Sea Shell Pearl and the difference between pearl and shell pearl.
A: Shell pearls are another name for imitation pearls that are made with a combination of powdered shells and resin. These are marketed sometimes as South Sea Shell Pearls or Majorca pearls. There are a variety of names for them but they are not genuine organic pearls, and are typically very inexpensive.

Are majorica pearls considered shell pearls as well?
No. Majorica pearls are imitation pearls made with a glass-bead core, not a shell core. The bead is dipped into a solution called essence d'orient (which actually has a type of fish scale as an ingredient) that coats the bead and produces a pearl-like luster effect.
