Hanadama Akoya

Q: Re your Hanadama strands: I am thinking about either the 8-8.5mm or the 8.5-9mm strand. However, I would want it 16". Is that a possibility, and if so, would the price change? Or, could I have earrings made up with the extra pearls from the 18" strand? Also, should tell you I referred my son-in-law to you last year and he was happy with both your customer service and product. This year, I referred my daughter's father-in-law to you, and he was also very happy.

A: We have a few Hanadama strands in either size at the moment and could string one at 16” for you. The pearls removed from the strand could then be made into a dangle style earring with any of the lever back findings on the site or a simple French Wire. The earrings will need to be a dangles since the pearls are full-drilled. We do not alter the price of the Hanadama strands because that particular quality is so rare and the matching very difficult. Most of our customers prefer to keep the loose pearls in case the wearer wants to lengthen the strand in the future or in the unfortunate event the strands breaks and one pearl goes missing, you have the loose pearls already matched to the strand.

Thank you so much for referring our Site. We do hope they are equally pleased with our product and service.

Black Freshwater Pearls

Q: I saw a site with wholesale necklaces of "black freshwater pearls." I always thought that these were color enhanced, not natural colors, if they were freshwater. The manufacturer is in China. Can you bring me up to date on this?

A: You are correct about black freshwater pearls – they will have been colour treated. The only naturally occurring “black” pearls are Tahitians from the South Pacific, French Polynesia regions. Some freshwater pearls do occur in colours other than white but those are in the pastel colour range like pinks & lavenders. When you see freshwater or Akoya pearls in the black, peacock colours or in very intense colours such as bright green or blue, they have been dyed.

We, at Pearl Paradise, strive to make sure that the descriptions of these pearls on our website indicate some form of colour treatment so that our customers are fully informed. The dark colour treated freshwater pearls are a very popular item since they are reminiscent of natural colour Tahitian pearls but are available in a more accessible price range. You are wise to do your homework so you can make an informed choice in your purchase. If you need any additional information, please feel free to contact us and we’ll be happy to assist. We also recommend the following website for information about pearls and the pearl industry:

Matching Several Pieces

Q: IS THERE A WAY TO MATCH UP A NECKLACE PENDANT WITH EARINGS SO THE SETTINGS AND PEARLS ARE SIMILAR?

A: When an order is placed with more than one item, like a pendant and earrings, if they are the same type of pearls then we automatically consider they are a set and match them accordingly. If the items are ordered at separate times, then we will send the item according to the specifications on the order such as the overtone color, but we cannot guarantee the pearls will match exactly.

14 inch Necklace

Q: Could you tell me if you are able to offer a different necklace length to the one advertised? For example, I have seen an Akoya necklace I like, but it is advertised as 16" and I would ideally prefer 14" or 15". Thank-you for your assistance with this query.

A: We certainly can make a strand for you at a custom length if you like. There are two ways we can accomplish this. Firstly, you can order the standard 16” length and request to have it shortened to a specific length. Simply order the item via the website and then type a request into the Special Instructions box indicating you prefer the strand at 14” or 15” and we will include the extra pearls off the strand in the package. The advantage to this is that in the future, should you want the strand longer or in the unlikely event the strand breaks and one pearl goes missing, you already have the pearls that match the strand perfectly. The other option is for one of us to place the order for you as a custom item. The price would be adjusted to your preferred length – even if it’s 14.5” or anything you like. We can also put either white or yellow gold on the strand as you like.

Kinked Knots

Q: My husband gave me pearls from you for Christmas. They seem to look crooked and do not lay flat on my neck. They look the same in the box. Is this normal? I have a pair that is not real and they lay better. I need to know if I have to return them.

A:
It is normal for a new strand of pearls to hang a bit crooked or appear kinked up. We purposely have our strands strung and knotted very tightly because during the first several hours of wearing a new strand, the silk thread naturally relaxes into the knots and settles into place. When this happens, the pearls loosen up just a bit and then hang in an attractive and fluid manner. If the strands were knotted to appear smooth and fluid at the beginning, when the thread relaxes, the pearls then would become too loose and the pearls would wiggle back and forth between the knots. The choice to have them strung very tightly has another benefit as well, it protects the thread from becoming soiled and frayed too quickly which requires re-stringing. While it is necessary to re-string pearls approximately once a year, when the thread becomes damaged it is more likely to require re-stringing more frequently and does increase the possibility of the strand breaking. Once you wear your strand a few times, it should hang out nicely!

Jeremy's Book

Q: What would be the best way to start learning about pearls and get into the business? Has Jeremy written a book? I think his story would make a fantastic read.

A: Yes, Jeremy has written a book! The link is below at Amazon.com so you can take a look if you would like to order it.
http://www.amazon.com/Start-Home-Based-Online-Retail-Business/dp/0762742461/ref=dp_return_1/104-0209764-7353525?ie=UTF8&n=283155&s=books
Another good information resource is the Pearl-Guide.com. This is an independent information website about pearls and the pearl industry. The site offers a variety of technical and grading information, articles and updates on the industry, and has a forum section where you are able to read discussions and post questions. Many of the participants are experts in all aspects of pearling and the pearl industry from all over the world so it’s very informative even for someone just starting out.

Ship to Australia

Q: How long would it take to get something to Australia?

A: The shipping time depends on the delivery method you select when you place the order. For international orders you have the choice of Global Priority Mail or International Federal Express. Global Priority Mail can take up to 2 weeks depending on a variety of circumstances, customs processes for each receiving country, delivery location, etc. International FedEx generally takes 3 or 4 days with the same caveats. We highly recommend using Federal Express for the tracking services.

Most orders are shipped within 1 day of the date they are placed. If you have specific item(s) in mind and would like to know their immediate availability and the estimated ship date, please let me know which those items are and I’ll be happy to check those for you.

Tahitian Rondelle

tahitian pearl rondelle necklace Q: What would the price of your Tahitian rondelle necklace be if the pearls were 10-11mm in size and 11-12mm size? Then, prices please for your standard 9-10mm, 10-11mm and 11-12mm pearls, but 20" length.

A: The price for a Tahitian rondelle strand (TAH18) with 10-11mm pearls at 18” would be $5,900.00. The same 18” strand with 11-12mm pearls would be $6400.00. Then if we were to increase the length to 20” the prices would be $5,500.00 for the 9-10mm, $6,140.00, and for the 11-12mm the price would be $6,725.00. We do have pearls to make the strands in peacock overtones at the moment, so let me know if you are interested in any of those options and I will claim the pearls before they are gone.

Pearl Earrings with White Gold

Q: Hello, I'm looking for a simple gift for my girlfriend. I was wondering if the Pair of 7.0-8.0mm AAA White Freshwater Button Pearl Stud Earrings could come with white gold posts instead of yellow gold? Would the price be the same?

A: Yes, we can make those with white gold for you! You can very easily place the order via the website at your convenience and request the earrings with white gold if you are purchasing an item that does not give a drop-down menu selection. During checkout, below your billing address, there is a box titled Special Instructions where you can type a note indicating your preference and we’ll take care of it for you. The price is exactly the same.

Add A Pearl Necklace

Q: My husband and I are interested in purchasing a strand of pearls from your online store. The pearls that we want to get are the Freshdama pearls. These pearls are for our niece. We would like to give parts of the pearls to our niece as an add a pearl gift. We figured that it would be better for us to buy a strand and restrand it ourselves as we give her a section each year. We were wondering if there is anyway we could be shown how to restring pearls. We are thinking of buying another strand of pearls for my husbands mother and possibly doing the same thing. We live in San Diego, Ca and are willing to drive to LA to be shown how to restring the pearls.

A: Your idea of starting with a complete strand and then creating your own version of the Add-A-Pearl necklace is a good one. It is much more costly and difficult to accomplish in the traditional manner but still a really nice tradition. If you are interested in learning how to string pearls, your best option is to find a local class. This is a skill that requires specific instructions and quite some practice to become comfortable with the process. You might check with local bead shops or community college for courses. We could do our best to teach you in a single day, but I really do not think it would be possible.
Maybe we could knot it for you every year?

Blue Freshwater Pearls

Q: I recently purchased a pair of lavender Freshadama dangle earrings and love it very much. I would like to know whether you sell the same quality of freshwater pearl earrings in colors besides the 3 basic colors available in your website. The color I am most interested in is 10 mm grey and blue.

A: We are so pleased you like the Freshadama earrings! The Freshadama pearls and freshwater pieces we offer on the site are all natural color so there is a great deal of variation in each set. A gray color may be possible since it is closer to the lavender family but we would have to sort through the inventory to see if we have any that are more gray. That color is more often found in the Tahitian pearls than freshwaters. The blue color is also very unusual for freshwater pearls, that would fall more into the Tahitian category as well, but blue is going to be more in the silver/blue color range.

Fancy Color Diamonds

Q: HI! I was wondering if you sell the starlight collection with colored diamonds. There is a piece on www.purepearls.com that has white freshwater pearls and canary colored diamonds here. I am thinking about the same thing but with pink diamonds. I have fair skin and blond hair, and I just think this pairing would be a perfect fit.

A: Those are beautiful earrings. We are almost jealous Pure Pearls thought of them first. Unfortunately at this point we have no immediate plans to start offering fancy color diamonds. I do know, however, that Pure Pearls mentions they will be offering a full line of fancies with pearls in the next couple of months. I would suggest just contacting them and asking about the pinks.

Switch Pearl in My Necklace

Q: I have a necklace with a 9mm akoya pearl in it. I was wondering if you would be able to change the pearl to a freshadama one, and what the costs might be. This is a picture of the necklace:
http://www.paulmorelli.com/TestB1/diamonds.htm
It is the upper right necklace from this link, with a single pearl in the center of the gold wire.

A: I took a look at the link and the necklace in the top right-hand picture has a series of diamonds placed on what appears to be a cable or wire necklace. If you have this piece with a pearl in the centre and want it changed out, we would need to see the piece in person to determine the assembly technique used on the original, and what work would be necessary to switch the pearl. I am sorry that I can’t offer you a definitive answer at this time. But without the piece here, we have no way of knowing if it would be possible to even change the pearl. If you do not feel comfortable sending the item to our offices, you may want to explore some local jewelers or a goldsmiths to see what they say first.

Tahitian Wholesale Lots

Loose Tahitian Pearls
Q: Do you sell wholesale Tahitian pearl lots? I am interested in more information.

A: We do sell wholesale. If you can let me know the size, quality and quantity of pearls you are looking for, we would be happy to give you pricing. Because we deal in fairly large volume, it’s likely that at any given time we will be able to provide the pearls you need.

Graduated or Not

Q: Re: Full Set of 7.0/7.5mm AA+ or AAA White Akoya Pearls I am interested in possibly purchasing this for my wife on our anniversary. I was wondering about the size. They are one size 7.0 or 7.5. What is variance of size the pearls could be. Also, it appears in the picture that the necklace is graduated. Please explain the sizing there. Is the largest pearl in the necklace 7.0/7.5, depending on the product. Also, kind of tick tack thing, but I noticed the clasp on 7.5mm necklace was fairly bulky as opposed to the 7.0mm which is in my opinion more subdued. At all the places, I looked at this seems to be fairly common. Why? Finally, from an aesthetics perspective, this would be my wife’s first real set of pearls, so we are going for white/ivory. For what purpose do people by the other colors? Also, I would imagine the most popular gold is yellow gold. My wife has a lot of white gold, including her wedding ring. Does it make a difference? Is it just preference? I didn’t see any examples on your website with white gold, so it is difficult to determine whether to get that or not.

A: I will respond to your questions in the order you posed them and hopefully clarify the information you seek.
1. Industry standard is a .5mm graduation allowance for saltwater Akoya strands. This means that the strands in question would be 6.5-7.0mm or 7.0-7.5mm with the smallest pearls in the back where the clasp is attached and then graduating smoothly to the largest in the centre front.
2. The strands may appear more graduated in the photo because of the perspective. In actuality, the strands will only graduate up to .5mm from front to back.
3. There is a standard clasp for all of our strands depending on the size of the pearls. We use a classic pearl clasp on all strands up to 7.0mm, from 7.5mm and up we use a ball style clasp. If you prefer the pearl clasp (also called a fishhook style) we could customize the set for you with the clasp of your choice.
4. Choice of overtone is generally based on skin-tone and personal preference. 5. Gold color is also based on personal preference. If your wife prefers the white metals then you would probably do best to select white gold. This way the pearls will coordinate with her most treasured pieces such as her wedding band.

Single Pearls

Loose Single South Sea Pearl
Q: I would like to buy single pearls. Is this possible? Where do i ask?

A: The short answer is yes, you can purchase single pearls from our site. However, there are a few caveats with the loose pearls. The exotic or South Sea pearls are available both undrilled or drilled, but the Akoya and freshwater pearls are available either half-drilled or full-drilled. If you can give me some additional information about the size, type, quality, and end-use of the loose pearls you are looking for, I will be able to offer you more detailed information about availability and pricing.

Shorten My Necklace

Q: I received my 'freshadama' 7-8mm white necklace today, and the pearls are beautiful! However, I was already planning to have them resized to 17" (I waited since I didn't want to risk not liking the freshwaters). What would you charge to restring an 18" necklace to 17"? Also, do you re-string 3rd party necklaces (an 18" akoya I would like resized to 17")? Finally, the freshadamas have 2 pearls that are inappropriate for the strand. One that is rather smaller than neighbors and another that has a small dull spot where surface nacre did not form or has chipped. I would like those pearls removed. Would there be some way to mark those peals so that they would be included in the pearls remove to reduce by 1"? Or would it be easier to return the order, then order a 17" necklace and hope for the best. For the prices above, please include return shipping (back to me) by the least expensive means.

A: First of all I am so glad you like the pearls! These Freshadama pearls have created quite a buzz in the pearl market and we have been so pleased with the feedback.

We would be happy to restring the strand for you at 17” and remove those pearls you mentioned. There are a couple of ways to mark the pearls you would like removed, you can take a piece of tape or part of a mailing label for example, and wrap it around the individual pearls. Or, believe it or not, you can take a permanent marking pen like a Sharpie marker and make an X or some other demarcation on the pearl. This does not harm the pearl at all and does have the added advantage of not coming off easily in the shipping as sometimes happens with labels.

It’s also no problem for us to restring your other strand of pearls as well. This is a service we provide for any strands that need knotting, be they pearls, beaded pieces, cut gemstones. In the case of your Akoya strand that you want at 17”, we would include the loose pearls with the package. The restringing charge is $20.00 for a standard length and shipping via USPS Priority Mail is $6.50. Because there are two pearls that apparently should not have been in the freshadama strand, we will redo that one free of charge.

You can send us the package via any delivery service you prefer since we accept deliveries from USPS, USP, FedEx, DHL, etc. The total charge for restringing your two strands and shipping them back to you via Priority Mail will be $26.50.

Should you decide to send us your strands, please include all your contact information and a detailed description of what you would like done. We will then contact you for your credit card information or if you prefer, you may include a check or money order for the full amount.

South Sea Pearl Color

Q: I'm looking for as surprise gift for engineer daughter, one pair from your selection of dangle white or gold South Sea pearl earrings. The question remains: how much variation is there in color, hue, tone, etc. from one set of earrings to another, in the same model –enough that I better plan on a visit to your showroom, or is the variation so slight that I could as well order a set sent by mail or UPS? Or does your Website price, "From $..." indicate a considerable variation in details of individual pearls, earring construction, etc., so that a good choice can best be made in your store? My wife is not involved in the selection of this gift. Thank you for your attention in this matter.

A: The earrings you are referring to (WSE-Classic or GSE-Classic) are priced based on size and quality, not necessarily on overtone. There is a great deal of variation in color for the Golden South Sea pearls but most of our inventory is similar to the pearls photographed on the site. Overtones can be gold, silver, rose, or even a slight green but the bodycolor for almost all of our earrings is in the medium gold range. White South Sea pearls are also found in a variety of overtones but these color differences are much more subtle. The white bodycolor is standard with overtones of silver, rose, or ivory. Because the price is based on the size of the pearls, you can indicate to us your preference of overtones and we will do our best to select pearls that most closely match your wishes.
We do not have a retail outlet but do offer appointment times in our offices Monday through Friday, starting at 10am up to 3pm – one appointment per day. Our calendar is usually booked up to two weeks in advance so your daughter would need to plan ahead. If you have a good idea of the preferences your daughter has, I am confident that we could select a pair of earrings for her that she would like. I’m expecting new South Sea pearls in the next day or so (both white and golden) so if you do decide to place an order in the next few days, we will have many pearls to select from and are more likely to have pearls in overtones your daughter would like.

Peacock or Green

Q: Hi, I was wondering what is the difference between the "peacock" and "green" overtone for the black Tahitian pearl? I have seen and most stores have the "peacock green" overtone, but not as 2 separate colors like the ones you have. Please clarify what does each overtone color mean.

Q: True peacock overtones are more of a combination of colors than any single color like green or silver. Peacock will have elements of blue, green, aubergine and rose – much like the tail feathers of a Peacock. As the pearl moves and shifts so will the color. The other overtones such as aubergine, green, aqua, and silver, will have more of a single color. The other factor will be the depth of bodycolor which changes the intensity of the overall appearance of the pearl. As you can see from our three illustration pearls, there is a marked difference between the colors.

The reason you see many “green” Tahitian strands advertised as peacock in jewelry stores is because of the rarity of true peacock. But these strands are not what we (or people in Tahiti) would consider true peacock.

Loose Pearl For Ring

Q: Dear PearlParadise, I am trying to source a loose pearl to be mounted on a ring. I have been reading with a lot of attention your website and forums and found that the type of pearl best suited to my needs would be either a freshadama or tahitian pearl. The size I am looking at is around .5mm (this might be too small for a tahitian perle). Could you let me know if you would be selling a pearl on its own. If so would you be able to give me a quote for the following: 1 Freshadama - color white or lavender 1 Tahitian - color silver or green overtone I would welcome any suggestions that would help me make the right decision.

A: I will be happy to give you pricing for loose pearls but need a clarification first. The smallest size of any pearls we have available are 6.0-7.0mm in Freshwater pearls and 8-9mm in the Tahitians. In your message below, you are asking about .5mm pearls which are extremely small and would be a novelty item. Below are the prices for each of those types of pearls in the smallest size we have available. Please let me know if you need any additional information or for any clarification of your request and I will be more than happy to oblige.

6-7mm Lavender or White Freshadama pearl (drilled, unmounted) $25.00 per pearl
8-9mm Tahitian (undrilled, unmounted) $135.00 per pearl

There is a considerable difference in the look of these 2 types of pearls so it really does depend on your personal style. The lavender Freshadama pearls are feminine and pretty, Tahitian pearls have a sophisticated and exotic appearance. Depending on your own personal style, and colour choices for your wardrobe it may be fairly easy to decide which would coordinate best.

If you already have the ring mounting, this would also help determine the size and type of pearl. You have the option of sending us the ring finding so that we can help you determine the size of pearl that can be accommodated on the ring and how it needs to be set. Each finding also requires a slightly different size drill hole for the post to fit inside the pearl, which we would need to know at some point to determine the drill size. Once you choose a type of pearl, and we are certain of the size, we can send you photos of individual pearls for you to select from.

Shell Pearls

Q: Could you tell me a little about South Sea Shell Pearl and the difference between pearl and shell pearl.

A: Shell pearls are another name for imitation pearls that are made with a combination of powdered shells and resin. These are marketed sometimes as South Sea Shell Pearls or Majorca pearls. There are a variety of names for them but they are not genuine organic pearls, and are typically very inexpensive.

Exchange For Larger

Q: I recently purchased a pair of pearl earrings and I was wondering if I could exchange them for a larger size. I still have the original box and everything so I was wondering if that would be possible.

A: Yes, you can exchange them for a larger size if you like. Simply return them to the address on your receipt, attention Operations Department. Include a copy of your invoice with a note (just written on the bottom is fine) indicating what you would like, and we will contact you immediately upon receipt.

Akoya Pearl Rope

Q: I am interested in a rope of large Akoya pearls 9-9.5mm in size in AAA grade. Is this something you can make in 90 inches, and how long would it take?

A: We would be more than happy to create a rope for you as described. I have just checked our vault and we have sufficient strands available in either Hanadama grade or AAA that match to create the strand, but only in a rose overtone. If rose is your preferred overtone, we can create the strand for you immediately. If, however, you prefer silver or ivory, we will have to contact our supplier in Japan to send a matching hank. This could take up to 3 days.

18kt Gold Findings

Q: I was wondering if you have any plans to set your pearls in 18k gold anytime soon. I am interested in some drop earrings and some single pearl pendants, but I am not too fond of 14k.

A: We do not have any plans to offer 18kt gold on the site but could certainly offer you the option of a custom order in 18kt. The standard lever back style earring findings are available in 18kt. If you have an idea of some styles and give us some descriptions, we could find out what is available in the 18kt and send you photos and prices of these. You will also need to tell us if you prefer white or yellow gold, and if you like any diamonds on the findings.

Cultured or Freshwater

Q: What is the difference between freshwater and cultured pearls?

A: The vast majority of pearls on the market for the past 100 years have been cultured pearls. Natural pearls were the norm until the oyster and mussel beds were over harvested and nearly sent both these mollusk genii into extinction. Several resourceful individuals were developing the culturing process at about the same time and by the early part of the 20th century, the process was being used in all arenas of pearl farming. Freshwater pearls are cultured pearls as are Akoya and South Sea pearls. Culturing means that a nucleus of either a mother-of-pearl bead and a small piece of mantle tissue, or in the case of freshwater pearls simply a piece of mantle tissue, is surgically implanted into the mollusk. The nuclei act as an irritant so that the mollusk begins to deposit layers of nacre to protect itself. In this way the pearls are developed, the size and quality depending on a variety of factors including the amount of time the mollusk is allowed to gestate.
Many people confuse freshwater pearls with natural pearls because freshwater pearls do no have a bead nucleus. When freshwaters are x-rayed, they appear much the same as natural pearls for this reason. When one is buying natural pearls, it is a known entity and is done with purpose since they are the most rare and valuable of pearls. Generally, natural pearls are of interest to collectors, investors, and sometimes designers. We do offer a small selection of natural pearls on our site in their own category, the link to this page can be found in the top right-hand corner of our home page.

Tahitian Pearl Pendant Under $500

Q: I am interested in purchasing a Tahitian pearl pendant in the price range of $500 plus. If you have any inventory you can forward online would be appreciated.

A: We have a variety of pendant styles and pearl sizes available on the website at the moment. I have included a link below to our main Tahitian pendant page:
Tahitian Pearl Pendants

The site is kept up-to-date as far as inventory and availability so you can simply click on the styles you like to see a detail page. On each page there is a drop-down menu to show you the pearl sizes and the prices for each. In this manner, you can build the pendant as you like and see the prices right there on the page.

Custom Chain

Q: I am looking for a loose (with no necklace or mount) pre-drilled, AAA, 12.0-13.0 mm Tahitian with a silver overtone. I am trying to create a necklace similar to the Solara Collection, Solitaire Collection or the 11.0-12.0 mm AAA that you sell on the 18-inch leather necklace (I don't particularly care for any of these three necklaces and would prefer to supply my own). But, you do have the best prices by far of any where else that I have looked and I would therefore be interested in doing all of my future pearl business with your company. Is there a page on your site I can pull up that you all list just loose pearls, descriptions and prices?

A: Yes, we can certainly supply you with just the loose pearl. To view all the pearls available by size, quality and price simply go to the search function on the site and type in the word “loose.” When the page loads on your screen you will see a variety of findings and pearls. The loose pearls are towards the bottom of the page. There are 2 groupings of Tahitian pearls with sizes and prices for each. You have the choice of ordering directly from the site using the drop-down menus or calling our office to place an order. Should you decide to order via the website, type a note into the Special Instructions box indicating your preference of overtone and any other details you feel would be helpful for us in choosing your pearl. As for the drill-hole, you will need to specify the millimeter size of the drill needed to accommodate your chain.
We do have many customers who design and create their own jewelry pieces and purchase the loose pearls from us so we are more than happy to add you to our distinguished list!

Similar South Sea Strand

Q: Good afternoon, I have been visiting your site for a couple of months, and would like your advice. I am in the market for a rich gold body colour, 18/19 inch strand of south sea pearls. I am buying for my wife, and am looking for AAA grade pearls with deep rose overtones to complement her complexion. Unfortunately, your strand GSS324 would have been ideal, but it is sold! Could you advise me if you anticipate having a comparable strand in the next few months.

A: Yes, that strand is already sold however our inventory is constantly changing as items are sold and we source new strands. I would be happy to see what is available based on your preferences and keep you informed. Once we have some strands that you might like, we can take photos of those strands and email them directly to you before they are posted on the website. Along with the photos, we’ll give you all the pertinent information about the choices such as size, grade quality, overtone, and price. Because these will be unstrung just as all the exotic strands you see on the website, we’ll have the perfect opportunity to customize the final piece with the clasp of your choice as well as the finished length if you prefer the strand to be a bit longer than the standard 18”.

I’m expecting a few more Golden South Sea round strands in the next day or so. When they arrive, if you would like I’ll send you a photo with some possible strands, and if any of them are interesting to you we can proceed. Should there not be any you like in this new selection and you’re not on a deadline, we’ll keep looking until we find just the right strand.

Solara and Solitaire

Q: I have a question about the Solara Collection Necklace. Is the pearl used in it also AAA? What is the difference between Solara and the Solitaire besides the chain? Are the pearls different? They seem to start with different sizes.

A: Yes, the pearls used on both the Solitaire and the Solara are AAA quality. The chain for the Solitaire is a fluid snake chain with the pearl permanently affixed. The Solara is an omega chain with a clasp that unscrews on one end so you can remove the pearl. This way you can purchase additional pearls in other colours and wear those on the chain or use the omega chain for pendants or slides already in your collection.

The Solitaire is a more casual style with the snake chain, the Solara is more of a professional or formal style. The choice is really up to the person wearing the piece based on personal preferences and perhaps profession and which is more appropriate for your life style.

Tahitiperlenkette Zertifikat

Natural Pearl Necklace

Q: I have a natural pearl necklace that was given to me in Japan by my Aunt. The necklace is at least 50 years old. The pearls are fairly large and round, in size about 1/4" in diameter and over 50 in the strand). The length of the necklace is about 16". I had a jeweler look at it in 1984. He told me they were "priceless". I am interested in selling my necklace. Can you help me? If not, do you know who might be able to help me?

A: We do not offer appraisal services ourselves, however I would suggest contacting Sharon Wakefield of NW Gem Labs in Boise Idaho for a valuation of the necklace. A lab like the GIA would be good to determine whether or not a strand is natural (GIA is located in Carlsbad), but this is not necessary. The pearls are indeed cultured, and unfortunately the jeweler was mistaken. This is very common (yet unfortunate), however, as few jewelers in the US have more than a rudimentary knowledge of pearls.

Natural pearls were fished in the Middle East and the Americas, but only up through the early part of the last century. With Mikimoto’s first harvest of round cultured pearls in 1916, the natural pearl industry finally fell apart. Although there were some boats still operating out of Bahrain and Oman until the 40’s, this was strictly local production for local demand. Natural pearls were not marketed in Japan as this was the home of the cultured pearl industry. These Japanese pearls became exceedingly popular in the late 40’s and 50’s after the war. Many GI’s brought strands back to the United States, and these strands were almost universally graduated up to 7mm (larger in the center). These pearls were also round, which is something that natural pearls are not – a full necklace of truly round natural pearls does not exist.

That being said, in order to sell the necklace you should first get an adequate, independent appraisal. I do believe Sharon Wakefield is one of the best in the business. She will also provide you with a retail valuation – something the GIA will not. She can be reached here:
Northwest Gemological laboratoryPO Box 8243 Boise, ID 83707 (208) 362-3938 FAX (208) 362-2889

I am sorry that I do not have better news for you, but I do hope things work out with your necklace.

Pelosi Necklace

Q: I am interested in a necklace about 19-20" that is a combination of A ++ gold, peacock, white, etc. South sea pearls of various lengths. I am only interested in round shapes, with very little inclusions. What do you have in that category?

A: We do have a strand that fits your description with the exception of the length, but we can adjust the length of this strand to your specification quite easily, and would adjust the price accordingly. The strand below is listed as AAA grade, and is perfectly round, with sharp colors and luster, and clean surface.
http://www.pearlparadise.com/detail.aspx?ID=1145

Please take a look at the stand pictured in the above link and see if this is the strand you are envisioning. It is always easier to have a reference point even it it’s not precisely what you are looking for.

Returning Purchase

Q: How does one go about returning jewelry?

A: You may return any item within 90 days of the date of purchase as long as the item(s) are in new condition. Pearl Overtone

Q: I'm interested in buying a set of pearl jewellery for my fiance's birthday, but wanted to know more about the option of overtones. I assume she'd like whatever I get her, but I think she'd prefer a more classic look - would this mean silver or ivory overtone?

A: The overtones are generally chosen based on the skin tone of the person wearing the pearls. Similar to selecting the colors in ones wardrobe, pearl overtones are generally the most flattering when they are a compliment to the skin tone and not the same as the skin tone. The three most basic overtones are rose, silver, and ivory with the breakdown more or less as follows:
Silver overtone - warm or ruddy skin color,
Ivory overtone – cool skin color
Rose overtone – most universally flattering, not the best on red or ruddy skin color

If you are not sure of her skin tone, you can also determine it by the colors she has in her closet. Should she prefer ivory, yellow, or gold colors, you should select ivory overtone. If she wears more blues, bright whites, and cool colors, then the silver or rose overtone may be your best bet.

Small Tahitian Pearls

Q: Do you have any black Tahitian necklaces that are 5-6 mm in size?

A: Tahitian pearls have an average size range of about 8mm to 14mm with some larger sizes occurring but becoming increasingly rare as the size increases. The Pinctata margaratifera oysters are quite large in size so the bead nuclei used are larger, generally starting at about 7mm. The end results are much larger size range of pearls than either Akoya or Freshwater pearls. If you are interested in smaller size dark pearls, we offer treated Freshwater strands starting at 6-7mm and treated Akoya strands starting at 6.0-6.5mm. Neither of these have naturally occurring dark color like Tahitian pearls so they will have been color treated to give them a dark coloration. These treatments have been in use very many years and as such have proven themselves to be stable and do not require any care other than the standard care for any other pearl type.

Freshadama Set

Q: I am interested in purchasing a Freshadama pearl set (necklace, earrings and bracelet) for my wedding day. I am interested in the 7.0-8.0 set, FPN208, and I also like the 8.0-9.0 set, FPN30. The price more than doubles, but I see that there is a large size difference in the full1mm, other places I've seen differentiate between 1/2 mm. Therefore, I was wondering if you can customize my set as follows. 1. Instead of 18 inches, I would like a 17 inch length. 2. Instead of stud earrings I would like dangle earrings. 3. Instead of 7.0-8.0 mm or 8.0-9.0mm (1mm difference), can we arrange a 8.0-8.5mm pearl set (1/2mm difference)? I've seen this size offered in other websites and hope you do also. In other words, I would like to settle somewhere in between your two options.

A:
The industry standard for all freshwater pearls is delineation by a 1mm size range, as with the exotic South Sea pearls. The standard for Akoya pearls is a .5mm size gradation on any given strand so you may have been looking at saltwater pearls as well as freshwater. One reason for this difference in graduation standards is that most freshwater pearls are not perfectly round so when one measures a single freshwater pearl in a variety of directions, the measurement will not be consistent – rather like measuring an egg. In the case of the very round Freshadama pearls, the strands will have a small graduation (usually in the .5mm range) but the strand as a whole, will be somewhere in its 1mm size range. For example, when someone orders a 7-8mm Freshadama strand or set, the items will have some graduation and be somewhere between 7.0mm and 8.0mm.

As any pearls get larger, all things being equal, the price does increase considerably because the rarity of these increases. The Freshadama pearls are extremely rare and as such the larger the pearls in this category, the higher the prices go to reflect this rarity.
We can customize the set as you request with the strand at 17” and make the earrings into dangles, the price will depend on which size you ultimately select. You also have the option of purchasing the strand and the dangle earrings separately if you prefer a set without a bracelet. Both the necklace and dangle earrings are listed on the site as standard items.

Solara Collection Options

Q: I am considering purchasing the Solara Collection Pearl Necklace, TAP-Solara, in the Peacock color and wanting to add to it two pearls in the future. What would be the price of the additional pearls without the necklace? Would they come drilled to add? Is there any chance of them rubbing together and scratching? Are there only the three colors to choose from? Sorry, if I overlooked this info.

A: The price of the pearls will depend on the type of pearl, the size, and quality. The Golden and White South Sea pearls are higher priced than the Tahitian pearls because of the rarity of these pearls. If you would like to view all the individual pearl prices, follow this procedure:
Go to the search function on the website
Type in the word ‘loose’.
A page will load with a variety of loose items including findings.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see the Golden and White South Sea loose pearls.
There are drop-down menus under each one with prices for all the sizes and qualities.

If you would like to order any additional pearls for the Solara, you would simply indicate in the order that you want it drilled for that piece and we will take care of it for you. South Sea pearls come in 3 varieties, Tahitian, Golden, and White. Each of these occur in a variety of overtones. But if you are asking about natural pink or lavender bodycolor, however, the only possibility is in freshwater pearls.

Drooping Ear Lobes

Q: I own a pair of 11mm Tahitians that exposed the white gold stud (the round part that fits against the pearl) a bit due to drooping in my earlobes. I had them reset as drops but I really would like a pair of large South sea studs. Short of having plastic surgery to increase the size of my ear lobes do you have any suggestions?

A: It is a common problem with the larger size pearls for the earrings to pitch forward or droop. I'm certain you do not have faulty earlobes because I have the same issue and have taken to wearing all the large pearls as dangles as well! Generally up to about 10mm will stay more upright, but when the pearls get larger, the weight will begin to pull them forward. If you use the earring backs that have a clear disc around them (about 1/4") this also helps to stabilize the earrings. We generally include a pair of these large disc-backs with earrings of 11mm or larger, but if you do decide to order a pair of any size and would like us to send you a pair of these backs, just let us know and we'll be happy to include them with the package.

Multicolor Freshadama Pearl Necklace

Q: Hello, I am trying to decide between the Multicolor Freshwater Pearl necklace and the Multicolor Freshadama Pearl necklace. Are the colors of the pearls in both necklaces the same colors? I was looking at pictures of both types of pearls and both necklaces look very beautiful. If I bought the Multicolor Freshwater Pearl necklace (not the Freshadama) I would probably upgrade to the AAA+ pearls. What is your opinion on the two different types of pearl necklaces?

A: The colors in all the freshwater pearls occur naturally, so there is tremendous variation from strand to strand. Generally, the colors are in the same family however. The major differences with the freshwater pearl qualities are the standard value factors but not color. The grade levels are AA+, AAA, and Freshadama with your choice being based on budget and overall look of the strand. AA+ quality are slightly off-round with good luster and surface blemishing of up to 10% (very light to none). AAA quality freshwaters are near-round, high luster, and 95% blemish-free surface. Freshadama have very high luster, are less than 5% off-round, and will often exhibit orient which is the rarest of the qualities found in pearls. Orient is a rainbow like iridescence seen across the surface of a pearl not unlike the effect you see on soap bubbles. This effect is actually produced by the diffraction of light playing through the concentric nacre layers. Because of the rarity of Freshadama quality pearls, the price points are considerably higher than even the AAA. However, depending on which factors are most critical, you would probably be very pleased with the AAA quality.

Leather Choker with Golden Pearl

Q: I have bought a couple things and sent a couple people to you. I am a true fan but my favorite thing so far is something I bought for myself: The leather choker with a black pearl. I am wondering whether I can get another one, but with a golden pearl (actually, my preference is the champagne overtones). Is that possible? If so, could you tell me how much?

A: We can certainly do that piece for you as a custom order if you would like one with a Golden South Sea pearl. There are a few colors of leather other than the black available as well. We have navy blue, cocoa brown, dark raspberry, deep olive green, lavender, and a natural or buff color. The price will depend on the pearl size and quality so if you can let me know those preferences, I will be happy to get back to you with a price.

Multicolor Tahitian Pearls

Q: Do you sell multicolored strands of Tahitian pearls? I am interested in about 11 or 12 mm with lots of color variation that would look good with more jewel toned wardrobe as opposed to pastels. I love the green tones, rosy to purple tones, some gold tones and not too much black tones. Do you have any pictures & prices you could send me?

A: We do have a multi-color strand available at the link included below:
http://www.pearlparadise.com/detail.aspx?ID=1145

This is a South Sea strand which includes all types of South Sea pearls. If you are interested in a strand of Tahitians alone but in a multi-overtone lay-up, there are a few posted in the site at the moment. Take a look at the strands currently available at the link below:
http://www.pearlparadise.com/tahitiannecklaces.html

You may like one of the strands already assembled however, if you do not we can use one pictured as a reference point to perhaps create a custom strand for you. It’s always easier to use an existing piece for reference.

Earring Has Detached from its Post

Q: I purchased a pair of stud earrings from you two years. One of the pearls has recently detached from its post. Please advise what I should do? Will you fix this, and if so, how much?

A: We are very sorry to hear about that! We would be more than happy to fix the earrings for you, absolutely free of charge. Simply send the broken earring back to us with your order number and a note. We will reattach them and expedite them directly back to you.

6.5-7mm or all 7mm

Q: In searching by size, when I look in the 6.5mm & 7.0mm category, and then in the “6.5-7.0mm AA+ or AAA Quality White Cultured Akoya Pearl Bracelet (7.5-inch)” category, the actual bracelet header says “7.5-inch 7.0mm AA+ or AAA White Akoya Pearl Bracelet.” What should I expect exactly in terms of size on this bracelet? Would the pearls on the “7.5-inch 7.0mm AA+ or AAA White Akoya Pearl Bracelet” range from 6.5mm to 7.0mm or would they all be about 7.0mm?

A: It seems you found a typing error on that item that I will go in and fix this morning. As is industry standard with Akoya pearls, the size range for each strand (or bracelet) is .5mm. So the bracelet in question will be 6.5-7.0mm. The size graduation is very subtle with the smallest pearls next to the clasp and gradually getting larger towards the centre. This means that the smallest pearls will be no smaller than 6.5mm and the largest will be no larger than 7.0mm. To the naked eye, the pearls will seem uniform in size but that .5mm range allows for ease of matching.

We strive for clarity in our descriptions indicating the quality and the size range for each item but apparently we missed this item. I will be double checking all the descriptions to make sure the information is included.

Custom Work

Q: This is a tentative enquiry, as I am not sure what exactly I am after. Does your company offer a custom-made service please?

A: The short answer is yes, we do offer custom work. As you begin to determine what you are looking for, please feel free to let me know some of the ideas and I’ll be able to let you know if we can provide the specific work you are looking for. Also, should you have any photos or sketches you can email, you may send those along and that will also help to determine if your items are something we can create for you.

Antique Pearls

Q: How do I find out if the pearls I have are natural or cultured. They were purchased in Japan during World War II.

A: There have been very few natural pearls on the market since well before WWII for a variety of reasons. If you have a strand that was purchased in Japan during that time period, they will be cultured Akoya pearls. They should also be graduated, as was the style during this time.

Most oyster beds where natural pearls were harvested had been nearly destroyed by the turn of the century when pearl culturing really began to take off. Unfortunately, there was world-wide over harvesting of those oyster beds in order to supply the increasing demand for pearls and the oysters came close to extinction in some cases. Many of the world’s governments stepped in and the oyster beds became protected territory. Japan was the first country to really pursue culturing as an industry and as such, most of the Akoya pearls came from that area until later in the century when China began to develop similar businesses. The history of pearls and pearl culturing is long and rich, if you are interested in more information about this I would be happy to point you in the direction of some sources and books.

If you are in need of an appraisal for you strand of pearls, our best suggestion is to find a local auction house or antique dealer who specialize in vintage and antique pearls. Many times these dealers will have recommendations of appraisers with the same specialty.

Large Freshadama Pearls

Q: How long do you think it will be before you carry 12MM or larger freshadama pearls? Please let me know.

A: The 11-12mm Freshadama pearls are exceedingly rare so when we are able to source them, there are generally only a few. Any pearls larger than that in the Freshadama quality, we have not seen to date. If you let me know exactly what you are looking for i.e. earrings, strand, etc. I will be happy to see if it’s possible to custom order. Mr. Shepherd, our company president, is currently on a buying trip and will be returning to the office on Tuesday next. When he in back in the office I’ll find out what he purchased, when to expect shipments, and whether or not he spotted anything available that fits your preferences.

16-inch Baroque Pearl Necklace

Q: Good morning, I'm interested in purchasing one of the Baroque Pearl Necklaces that you have on special, and I would like to know if you have these in a shorter version, 16-17 inches. Also, if I send a check, how do I place the order? Lastly, will I get an appraisal and certificate for my purchase?

A: All of the exotic strands on the site are one-of-a-kind and as such are currently on temporary strings. This is so that you have the opportunity to select the clasp you prefer when you order the strand. It also means that we can customize the strand to your specifications. If you would like any of those strands in 16” or 17”, we would simply select 2 or 4 pearls to remove from the strand when it’s strung and knotted with your clasp. We remove an even number of pearls to maintain the balance of the strand which means the final length may not be exact but we can certainly get close. Those loose pearls can then be made into dangle style earrings, pendants or enhancers, or you can simply hold onto them if you ever want the strand restrung at a longer length.

If you’re interested in making the payment with a personal check or money order, you will need to contact our office to place the order. At that time we will be able to give you a total for the item with applicable shipping and tax if you are within the State, place the order for you, and remove the item from the website. You would then mail the check to our offices and the strand will be shipped to you via your choice of USPS or Federal Express.

There is an appraisal included with each and every item purchased at Pearl Paradise. The document includes a detailed description of the item, the replacement value, and in the case of a South Sea strand, a photo of that specific piece. This appraisal can then be used for your homeowners insurance.

Pearl Earrings Screw-back Style

Q: Do you carry pearl ear rings that are not pierced and have screw style backing.

A: We do offer non-pierced earrings in either 14kt clip style or 14kt screw style. The earrings would be a custom order with an additional charge for either of these styles based on the increased gold content for the findings. The total price will be based on the type, size, and grade quality of the pearls you select. There will be no premium charged for this customization. If you would like a price for any specific earrings, just let me know the earrings on the site that you’re considering and I’ll calculate the final price for you. Since the earrings would be customized to your specifications, you may also select either white or yellow gold and in most cases you can select the overtone colour as well.

Generally for a custom earring order such as this, we only require one extra day and that is only if we do not have the exact gold finding on premises. Depending on the shipping method you select, it’s quite possible to have them delivered by the end of the week.

Charity Auction Donation

Q: I received and email from a friend this afternoon, and she mentioned that you might be able to donate pearls for our live charity auction. That would be wonderful if you could! Can I send you more information about our foundation and event? Please just let me know.

A: We would be more than happy to take a look at your information. We have a budget each year for donations, and a large portion of this goes to charity auctions. Please send us information on your charity, and specific information of the actual event. After discussing your event in house, we will determine how we will may able to assist, and respond to your inquiry shortly.

Lengthen Tahitian Baroque Necklace

Q: I am very interested in your baroque Tahitian pearl necklaces. However, I really need a longer length, 20-21 inches. Can you make me a longer necklace in that length? How much more is it for a custom length?

A: We would be more than happy to do this for you. The price will depend entirely on the size and quality of the strand you select, and then which pearls are required to extend the length. Loose pearls prices are based on quality and size, so we will have some leeway when selecting the pearls to add to a strand. For example, if you are fond of a specific strand that is 10-12mm in size, we can either add smaller pearls to the end (10mm), or larger pearls in the centre front (12mm), or blend in a few in different sizes along the entire length. In each case, the price will be different. But once you see a strand you like, we can work with you to determine exactly how you would us to create it.

Can You Set a Natural Abalone Pearl?

Q: Can you set the Natural Abalone Pearl 34.21 Ct NPA414 pearl in a necklace?

A: We can set the pearl for you but will need very specific instructions as to style, gold, etc. As this is a unique, natural pearl, once it has been drilled or set in any way, it will not be returnable. So it is critical that everyone knows exactly what needs to be done. If you are not certain how it is to be set or are still considering your options, you may order the pearl and take a look at it in its natural state before committing to a permanent setting. Any illustrations, drawings, schematics or the like would be very helpful as well.

Double Strand of Pearls

Q: What price can you offer for a AA+ or AAA triple strand of 8-9mm freshwater pearls?

A: This is a standard item on our site so you can take a look at the photos and see the prices based on the grade quality. Below is a link to the page with the details:
http://www.pearlparadise.com/detail.aspx?ID=1224

There is also a double strand version listed along with other versions of freshwater strands in that size range. Those are listed on the following page:
http://www.pearlparadise.com/freshwater-pearls-8-9mm.htm

If you are interested in any of those items using either the pink or lavender freshwater pearls instead, we could put that together as well. The price would be the same as for the white pearls.

Loose Tahitian Pearl Purchase

Q: Is it possible to purchase just 1 Tahitian White Pearl, half drilled?

A: It is possible to order just a loose pearl. We can send it undrilled, half-drilled, or full-drilled as you prefer. You have the option of ordering the pearl via the website at your convenience by doing the following:
Go to the search function on the site.
Type in the word ‘loose’
A page will load that has both loose findings and loose pearls.
You can view the pearls by type, size and grade quality, and order directly from the drop down menus.

If you do want the pearl drilled, simply indicate this by typing a note into the Special Instructions box below your address information as you go through the check-out process. You will need to specify that the pearl needs to be undrilled, half-drilled, or full-drilled and the size of the drill hole so do be sure to include that information. One other thing I want to confirm is whether you are interested in a Tahitian pearl or a White South Sea. In your query, you refer to a Tahitian White pearl however those are two different pearl types with quite different price ranges. The Tahitian pearls are those with silver or dark bodycolour and various overtones. White South Sea pearls are in the white colour family with silver, ivory, and sometimes rose overtones. You can see the prices for all the loose pearls on that page when you do the search to see what is available and the pricing.

Pearl For Ring

Q: Quick Question: I am looking for two large loose FW pearls- perfectly round, white (preferable pink overtone), and with only a blemish that could be covered in a medium-size ring or pendant mounting. Do you ever have anything like this in a 14mm size or larger? They would not have to match exactly in size. Pricing?

A: The largest size freshwater pearls we currently have are 10-11mm, anything much bigger than that you are looking at white South Sea pearls. We do have a few white 10-11mm Freshadama pearls that have rose overtones and may have a couple in AAA. The pearls do not match each other however, which is why we don’t have them on the website for earrings at the moment. Do you have a ring setting in mind? Are they both going on the same ring or is it one pearl per ring? The price would be $95.00 per pearl for the Freshadama and $45.00 per pearl for the AAA.

Pearl Stringing Services

Q: I have a strand of pearls I purchased from another vendor a few years ago. The knots are starting to space out a little and I cannot find a stringer locally. Is this a service you offer, even to non-customers?

A: We do offer restringing services for any of your pearl strands, whether they were originally purchased from PearlParadise.com or not. The charge for restringing starts at $20.00 and goes up as the length increases. A standard 16” to 18” strand would be $20.00 to restring.

South Sea Pearl Earrings with Diamond Accents

Q: I am interested in purchasing a white south sea pearl earring at least 12-13mm in width. However, would it be possible to purchase a pair with diamonds? For example, a small round brilliant at the top of the pearl - just like the ones offered for a white s. sea 9-10mm earring. If that could be custom made, please send me a price quote for that!

A: We would be more than happy to make these for you with the diamonds like the Starlight style you referred to, however you will need to let me know the size and quality of diamond you’d like before I can quote you a price. It would take us only 1-2 days to make them once we have all the specs. Also, please let me know the overtone preference for the White South Sea pearls and I’ll select them from our inventory for you.

Mikimoto Pearl Necklace

Q: I have on hold at the Mikimoto store on Fifth Avenue a 22-inch strand of 9.5 - 10mm A+ pinkish white Akoya pearls, which, including a rather elaborate diamond clasp, are priced at $63,000. Today I've been reading things on www.Pearl-Guide.com and other sites that make me think it is foolish to buy these at Mikimoto. Is anything of similar specs available through you, preferably of a higher grade?

A: It’s good you are doing your homework before making a final decision! We currently have a 9 ½ - 10.0 mm Akoya pearl strand available in AAA quality at $30,000 which currently is 18” in length. If you would like to make it into a 22”, we will need to add 4 more inches of 10.0mm pearls. The total price with a standard gold clasp for the 22” would be approximately $37,000.

If you have an idea about the clasp as far as style and diamond or no diamond, let me know that as well and I can email you photos of clasp options. The final price would be determined by the strand plus the clasp choice.

16-inch Tahitian Pearl Necklace

Q: I am interested in purchasing a Tahitian Pearl necklace but would prefer a 16 inch length over the 18 inch shown. Is it possible to have the length changed? If so, what is the time line for making the change. Would the price change? Would it be possible to have the pearls taken from the necklace made into stud earrings? I'm in somewhat of a time crunch so if it would be possible to respond on Monday the 2nd of April I'd really appreciate it.

A: Yes, we certainly could make a strand for you at 16”. All the listed items are at 18” which is the most popular length. However, we can either shorten a strand already on the site, or match pearls to make a custom strand at 16”. The discounted price will be based on the number of pearls removed from a strand in stock, or the number of pearls used to make a new strand. If you were to purchase an existing strand and keep all the pearls, then the price would remain the same. Those pearls taken off the strand could be made into dangle style earrings but not studs, as the pearls are already drilled completely through for the strand. The dangle style will work as we can put a headpin in the hole at the bottom of the pearl which would not show when the earrings are on the ear. The additional cost for the dangle earrings would depend on the style of finding selected. If you see any of the dangle styles already made up and listed on the site that you like, we can take those pearls off your strand and make the earrings with the findings of your choice. If you prefer a stud style earring, you may purchase those as a separate item listed on the site. We would automatically match the earrings to the strand if the items are purchased on the same order.

12.0-13mm AAA Tahitian Pearl Stud Earrings

Q: I wanted to order these just a moment ago; you appear to be out. Can you let me know when they are next available? I like them peacock with rose or aubergine overtones. The more vivid, the better for me. Thanks so much- I can give my credit card info if you let me know whom I should speak to, since they are out of stock.

A: Your timing is pretty good actually (if you are not in a real rush that is). Mr. Shepherd is leaving today for a buying trip and will be gone all of next week. The purpose of this trip is to buy…… Tahitians! So, if you don’t mind waiting about 2 weeks, we should be able to match a pair for you as soon as the new inventory arrive and have the pick of the best!
I will flag your email to make sure you are notified when they arrive but do feel free to contact me again in about a week and half to check the status.

Daughter's Graduation Gift

Q: Hello, I am interested in purchasing a pearl necklace for my daughter's upcoming graduation from university. Do you sell to customers outside the USA? I am in Ontario, Canada. I bought an 18" fresh-water pearl necklace (graduated-sized pearls) for my older daughter two years ago, and now I would like to buy something similar for my younger daughter. It could be 16 or 18" long, and the pearls could be one size or graduated...the main thing being that the necklace will be beautiful, will suit a 23-year-old, and is classic in its styling. I would also request an attractive clasp that can be displayed at the front or side, should she wish to wear the pearls in that manner. What would you recommend and in what price range?

A: We do ship internationally with two choices for delivery – Global Priority Mail or FedEx International. Both of those options are listed when you place items in your shopping cart and proceed with the check out process.

As for the classic strand of white pearls, there are numerous options for you depending on your budget. The classic white Akoya strands are available in both 16” and 18” lengths on the website. These are posted with standard clasps and choices of grade quality, overtone, and gold colour. Another good option if you are looking at high quality but within a smaller budget range, is the Freshadama grade freshwater pearls. I will include links below to both those listing pages.

The Akoya pearl strands are categorized by .5mm size graduation, Freshwater pearls are in a 1.0mm size range. To the naked eye these strands will all appear to be uniform in size but the size range allows some leeway in matching complete strands. The graduated strands fell out of favor in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s and have not really ever been popular since. Because the market for the graduated strands is so small, we just don’t offer them.
Our freshwater strands come in a standard 18” length but could be modified for your daughter. These are available in AA+, AAA, and Freshadama quality and include a standard clasp which differs depending on the size of the pearls. If you are looking for a clasp that is more decorative than merely functional, we do have a wide variety of clasps available. Once you can offer more details about the clasp and the pearl choice, I can send you photos of some clasp options and prices. We will need to know the gold colour, diamonds or no diamonds, size of pearls and type, etc. The budget is up to you, we can work within any budget you give us and make this a memorable graduation gift!

French Wire Pearl Earrings

Q: Hi Pearl Paradise, I love the freshwater French wire pearl earrings you have. I was wondering if it would be possible for me to buy a pair with slightly larger sized pearls? 7-8mm or a 8-9mm white pearls perhaps?

A: Yes, you can get the earrings in larger sizes! I read your message this morning and just went into the system to add the other sizes. If you go to the detail page for the Monthly Special, you will now see a drop-down menu of earring sizes along with the strand. I have also included those sizes for the earrings as a solo item so you can now order the size and colour you like right from the website.

South Sea Pearl Screw Back

Q: I am interested in South Sea pearl earrings and wondered if the studs have a screw back to prevent loss. Please advise.

A: Yes, we can make the post style earrings using a screw back finding. I understand completely the concern about loss with the larger South Sea pearls. Also, they are heavier than the more delicate Akoya pearls and as such, can have a tendency to pitch forward on the ear. With the screw style post, the back can be tightened a bit more and will stay securely in that position to minimize this behavior. There is an additional charge of $20.00 for the screw backs so whichever earrings you are considering, simply add the $20.00 to the price listed on the site and you will have the total price. Because this is a custom item, you will have to either call our office to place the order or we can handle it for you via email. Our regular office hours are 9am to 5pm PST, Monday through Friday.

Larger South Sea Pearl Earrings

Q: Hi I am looking for a pair of white pearl earrings in excess of 11mm. If you have anything of this size, please let me know Thanking you.

A: Yes we do have larger size white pearls for earrings. The following link takes you to the page of White South Sea earrings currently available.

If you are looking for something different, please let us know and we will be happy to discuss with you any customizations you might be interested in.

Setting for Non-Pierced Ears

Q: Do you offer non-pierced settings? (screw-backs or clips?)

A: Yes we do have non-pierced findings for earrings. We have 2 styles to choose from – clip style or screw style. The earring price will depend on the finding style you select and the type, size, and quality of pearls for the earrings. They would be a custom item and as such, you will need to call our offices to place the order. If you would like pricing information, please let me know the details of the earrings and I will be happy to get that information to you.

Shorter Length of Necklace for a Small Woman

Q: I was interested in a set of "Freshadama" pearls, but as my girlfriend is rather tiny, I was wondering whether you can do smaller sizes than those you currently list on your site. She prefers a necklace length of about 15 inches and a bracelet length of about 6.5 inches. Is this possible?

A: Yes, we can customize the strands to a shorter length. You have the choice of either calling our offices to place the order or placing in via the website at your convenience. Should you prefer to order via the website, simply type a note into the Special Instructions box below your address information indicating your preference of length and we will discount the appropriate amount from your order.

Pearls for a Child

Q: My niece, age 8, wants some pearls and I am uncertain as to whether I should select Akoya or freshwater. What would be your recommendation? Also, could a bracelet be made six inches instead of the larger size?

A: My recommendation for an 8 year old girl would be freshwater pearls unless the necklace is meant only for special occasions. The freshwater pearls are much more durable and will hold up better over time. It’s no problem at all to make a bracelet or a necklace in a shorter length. If you do decide to order a set for your niece, we can make both pieces in shorter lengths but include the loose pearls so that as she gets older, they can both be restrung longer with the pearls that already match.
